Dual Core G5 2.3 report
I've installed DP 4.61 and all the plugs and VIs... No problems except Final Cut pro studio 4.5 won't work with pci express. Only the new version 5 will work on the new macs. So get ready to put out another $699 for that little marketing trick. That has been the only downside.
Both machines are sitting side by side for this week and to my amazement the G5 dual core is nearly silent compared to the 2.5 dual processor G5 I've been using. I don't know why but it is noticibly faster which does not make sense being the dual processor actually specs out higher mgz and front side buss.
Both have 4 gig ram. The Dual Core is bigger and runs way cooler. I would guess half the temp of the previous model g5s. The firewire 896 HD and 828 work great so I would give this new generation G5 thumbs up...
I wonder what MOTU will do about the 424 card and the pci express...
I am also wishing I could have waited for a quad but that was not possible. If the quad is like this dual core it will be phenomenal. If it is quiet and not hot that will be a great machine that is a huge jump in performance.
I'll report any problems if they come up.

Re: Dual Core G5 2.3 report
The dual core has 1MB of L2 cache and the PCI-X generation has 512K of L2 cache. The dual core uses DDR2 (PC-4200) memory versus the older DDR (PC-3200) that PCI-X systems use. The graphics card that comes with the new Powermac also has much higher specs than the ATI Radeon 9600 (if that's what your PCI-X has). The PCI-X machines are still amazing and well worth their price, but these new dual core systems are just amazing.waxman wrote:Both machines are sitting side by side for this week and to my amazement the G5 dual core is nearly silent compared to the 2.5 dual processor G5 I've been using. Does anyone know what the cheapest configuration of an SBS chassis would be? It looks like the full-blown 7-slot chassis is around $1800. But I got the impression that you might be able to get other configurations. I haven't searched high and low, but I didn't find much about that. Anyone happen to know?MarkH wrote:SBS. It's like Magma only they also offer PCI-E cards for the host computer with 7 PCI slots in the expansion chassis.Jaysplace101 wrote:Wow, thanks Waxman! Great info. If there was a solution to this PCI-express thing, I'd have a quad on order today! Oh well.

Re: Dual Core G5 2.3 report
Actually it will work with a simple altering of the Info.plist file for FCP. There is some discussion about it over at www.xlr8yourmac.com with instructions on how to alter the file. Basically there is a line in some code there that says to not run on AGP MACs and if you delete that line...it will run and/or install just fine.waxman wrote:I've installed DP 4.61 and all the plugs and VIs... Here is the page that explains what to do when Apple did this with the conversion from PCI to AGP video cards a while ago. It is the same procedure now with the PCI-express conversion as well.

Why did Apple do that at the time & now again ? (as it seems there isn't any technical reason to do that due to some hardware/software compatibility issue... strange)
Oh wait... lemme guess... which company is developing FCP ?
Okay, that's it : shame on you (again) elppA !!!
Well Apple can have their $700 bucks if that is how they want to do business. What goes around comes around. Since I don't mind installing FCP on as many machines as I have. If I had the time I would do the editing but to do that with every update would be a pain. Then just my luck it would go down in the middle of a project and cost me $7000.
Back in the day we used to buy all in one packs and then they would go extinct. Anyone remember Oberhiem? OSX about 5 different versions in 3 years and everytime one came out the $3k machine you had became worth about $1k...
Now the deal is we buy a software package for $750 about every 18 months. It's called waves, FCP, Office, then through a iLok into the mix and a few $100 buck updates. Nothings changed just a different method of money slipping through your fingers...
ahhhhhhhhhhhhh... monopoly what a concept

Re: Dual Core G5 2.3 report
Same deal a few years back with a number of CD burners when we switched to OSX. Suddenly you had to buy new ones, because there was no driver for the old ones. Turns out, all you had to do was open up one little file in a hex editor, type in the name of your CD RW, save it, and you were in business. All that after tech support and customer service wailed a sob story about how sorry they were that Apple wasn't supporting it anymore, and you'd have to buy the new model. And so, at least one of our CDRWs still works 5 years after it was supposed to be obsolete.bralston wrote:

Makes you a little bit peeved, doesn't it?
I have not reinstalled my Waves software since upgrading to Tiger. I'm waiting to do that, because I did a clean install, and I want to try out their noise-reduction plugins for 14 days for free. But when I do finally install it and authorize my Platinum Bundle, I wonder if I'm going to have to buy an upgrade? Geez. The prices are mind-numbing.

What do you mean when you say "bigger"? Does the Dual Core has a larger or "taller" chassis?
Thanks

Yeah taller chassis...
All the software VIs and plugs installed...
you will need iLok if you want to do waves or Auto tune...
FCP won't work but I had already ordered vs 5 so that is n/a for me but thanks for the tip maybe in the future...
Lastly the biggest hassle was NI Komplete 2. It had some of the same problems with the installer as FCP. I did install the update installer for OSX of the NI website. I had the update 3 which just installed so if you move to a pci express machine just get the NI Komplete 3 update.
I must say out of all the companies NI has the worst support and website I have ever seen. Slow page loading, no direct email for tech and lame form emails for problems that don't have the option needed. Good thing there stuff is good because if they had to make it on service they would be in the bankrupt line...
I will let you know how the old projects come up... someone pray for me

Ok thanks for praying... The past projects came up fine except for a few BFD parameters which I just reloaded. All is well that ends well.
This machine is faster and smoother graphics. Less load on the processor...
Four DAYS to get this done and a few hours on Thanksgiving...
If I got a quad next month it would be worth it again....
I suggest anyone that goes for a new mac to get the quad if it is quiet and not hot... twice as fast as this would be really amazing...
