Wormhole working?

Post by nicken »

Anybody using Wormhole with great success? I‘ve read about lots of people having problems with it but are there any success stories out there?

funny you should mention it. i just downloaded the demo last night, and after a few head scratches, got it to work.

the biggest problem with wormhole is actually the sequencer's "fault." any track you use wormhole on must have audio piping through it already for wormhole to work properly, or at least must be fooled into thinking audio is passing through. i didn't know this, but tracks are apparently "muted" until they are being fed audio. wormhole won't work on a muted track.

there is a workaround. you can use an instrument track, load an instrument (there's one that does nothing but sit in your track called "dummyinst" that does just this, available for download) then instantiate wormhole right below it. it works!

though this procedure is kind of a pain, i try not to lose sight of the fact that i'm sending realtime audio though my network! that's is amazing. coupled with midioverlan, it's pretty easy to set up a cheap instrument farm on another box.

Sounds good. I was thinking of using a second G5 for virtual instruments and plugins. Do you think it would be possible to send audio through wormhole to the second computer and use for instance altiverb on that computer and send it back to my "main" computer again? What about latency?

the latency is scalable and pretty good, actually. surprisingly good.

you could certainly do a reverb send using wormhole, and this is one of the reasons i'm trying to set it up. i want to offload some of my plugs and my reverb to another machine.

mind you, i've really only tested this out to see if and how it would work. i haven't really run any real-world tests on it yet. but so far, so good.

I‘ll get my second computer next week and i will give it a try then. It would be nice to get it working.
