Will more memory help?

Post by EddieRivas »

I have a dual 450 G4 with 896 megs of RAM. I'm running 4.6 and 10.3.7 .

Will getting more memory help with crashes and improve performance or will I not get much more out of my machine?

Any suggestins?

Are you getting crashes? What kind? If I was in your situation, I'd do the following:
  • * Update to DP 4.6.1
    * Update to 10.3.9 at least, or to Tiger 10.4.3
    * Max out ram

If your crashes are caused by CPU spikes, the spikes can be minimized by raising buffer settings. Having more RAM available helps play and record buffers and takes some of the load off your CPU.

Go for 1.5 gb RAM- it's cheap these days,
Mac Studio Ultra/ 2013 Trashcan. DP10 and 11.
32 channels of Apogee Symphony MkII/ Dangerous 2Bus+.
Lots of Neve, API, and Dangerous outboard gear.

Memory Upgrade and a few thoughts....

Post by KED »

When I first got my DP 450 I had Digital Performer 2.7, OS 9.xxx and 256 Megs of Ram. As SOON as I went to 1 Gig of Ram, I noticed a major improvement in performance. I eventually installed 2 Gigs and that helped also (although OS 9.xxx only saw 1.75 gigs). My system was stable and worked great for a long time (I upgraded both OS 9.xx to 9.222 and DP 2.7 to 3.xx), I was able to record a ton of tracks without many problems (and I mean a ton), run effects and a few "early" virtual instruments. All was well until I moved to OS X and DP 4. OS X wasn't bad, but Digital Performer 4, the effects and virtual instruments began to crash all the time.

No more turn on the computer and create music, it was "I better save every song project every 2 minutes because I don't know when it's gonna crash." I tried every tweak I could think of and nothing made it stable again.

I say all of this to say that if you're serious about progressing with Digital Performer and the many new inovations for it and want to save yourself many headaches and time, either upgrade your processor, or upgrade your computer.

I'm about to upgrade my computer to a G5 something soon.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

I put a PowerLogix into my old single G4 450, and it worked flawlessly. I think others have had good results with Sonnet too.

More memory is always a good idea in the audio world.
Powerbook G4 1.67ghz (15"), 828mkII, rockit 8 monitors, and lots of coffee on those long late night sessions.
