Installed Mountain Lion and have lost Audio MIDI Setup?

Post by buzzsmith »

Hi, all.

(I Googled and tried to search the forum 'cause I know this has to have come up before…)

Last week I installed ML and DP 8.06 on an SSD and then cloned most info from my primary (and untouched) hard drive.

Most seems OK, however DP will not see the Audio MIDI Setup, therefore I have no MIDI routing available at all. Previous assignments are in italics.

The 3 MOTU audio interfaces ARE recognized.

When I click on Setup>Open Audio MIDI Setup… the "Setup" Menu item briefly flashes, but nothing opens. The same thing happens if I go to Applications>Utilities>Audio MIDI Setup and double click. A brief motion in the Dock as if it was getting ready to make room for the icon, but no window appears.

Also the AMS showing in the Applications folder is dated May 30, 2011 which makes no sense!?

I have installed the latest drivers from MOTU and have tried to locate a download for a more recent AMS but to no avail. Also ran Software Update and installed everything.

I'm at a loss!

Thanks in advance for any help or links!

Hopefully someone will have a definitive answer for you.

Depending upon available time (there's never enough) and another system to use if needed in the meantime...

I would go backtack
- deauthorize/deactivate any relevant software
- Erase the SSD, and install ML. Check out the AM Setup utility. Does it work?
- If the AM works, then install DP8.x. Does the AM Setup utility work?

If ok up to this point, then maybe something happened with the transfer of the cloned data.
After a clean install, I take the PITA time to manually drag into place what I need.

Hope you get this straightened out.

Thanks, but I didn't want to hear that! :)

I definitely can work from my primary hard drive with OS 10.6.8 and DP 8.01.

It is complete as it was. No files overwritten.

I just remembered that I made a startup drive with ML on a thumb drive.

Gonna take a look and see if AMS Is in there and what version.

If newer, I'll replace it on the SSD and see what happens.

I'm really not in a big hurry, but I'd like to get the newer system, etc. online and functioning sometime soon.

Buzzy

EDIT: Nope. I made a ML install disk on the thumb drive, not an actual bootable "disk".

AMS should be in the Utilities folder. It is part of the OS. Many utilities will not function if moved.

I would reinstall the latest drivers for your hardware. There were issues with Mavericks 10.9.2 and AMS. MOTU had to update drivers to fix and they should be backwards compatible.

Possibly, the OS update overwrote something or disturbed a path. Reinstalling the Universal Audio drivers and last MIDI updaters should fix any of those issues. Always repair permissions.

I am not in front of my iMac now or I would check what else needs to be addressed.

Just in case this thread pops up in a Google search, I'd call my issues partially resolved.

I did a reinstall of ML on the SSD and Audio MIDI Setup reappeared and is functioning.

However, I had to rebuild my current MIDI configurations (add instrument, select MIDI channels, etc.)

Now I need to go back in memory about 4 years and try to remember how I added the expansion cards to the patch list for a couple of the remaining hardware modules in the studio.

Also, Altiverb is not seeing its IR path correctly so it's not working right now, Superior Drummer wants to be reauthorized as does the Blue Cat metering plugin. Need to check emails and see if the key-codes are in there.

And again, this is independent of my current primary drive. All on the 10.6.8 drive is well and working.

So far, I think that's it...

I've been doing some looking around and with clockworks you can save your current MIDI setup.
So I think from now on I'm going to try to save as much of this setup stuff before I update OS's
or whatever. I had to redo my MIDI setup when I installed this new computer but I wrote everything down so I could get it all back the way it was with the old G5.

Yeah, Rick, that's what I ended up doing.

Rebooted the primary 10.6.8 drive and took a screen shot of the configuration and then wrote down the receive and transmit channels and then created a new configuration on the ML/DP 8.06 SSD within Audio MIDI Setup.

Working now except for the expansion cards' patch names and a few other issues mentioned above that are not AMS related.

I hope you're able to put things in order.
Like with a large project, maybe now keep a text log of set up notes, text list of authorization codes etc.

No kidding, but I have a 500 GB drives that about 3/4's full of installers by OS. Last summer I refurbished a G4 in order to have a decent dual boot system for OS9 and 10.4 for legacy conversion when needed.

It's a pain, but I'm set up to do a clean install around every major OSX update.
The main thing is being organized with lists, notes, and installers.

It's possible to drag your MIDI configurations from the user>Library>Audio>MIDI Configurations folder. But rebuilding is a fresh start.

I have one, also.

I now use it to open my wife's old Encore and AppleWorks files and convert them to something readable by out Intel Macs but, if I have an old DP file that gives me grief, that's where they go first.

Most of my important AppleWorks (and Clarisworks) documents have been converted. But it seems like there's always one more.

Scary to consider that while my Mac Pro1,1 is still a robust performer at 10.7.5, it's now set up with small partitions for Tiger through SL in case I need to go back (in the future :D ) to open something of significance. At this point, there must be 4-5 fully set up SL volumes on various drives and Macs. Worth it even if only used a couple of times a year.
