Multiple USB Keyboards Trouble

Post by deepcgi »

I have a USB 88 key controller, USB foot pedals and a USB drum brain. I set the keys to send MIDI ch1, pedals to ch3, and drums to ch10. They have no internal sounds. They send MIDI only. Because they are USB, they appear in the MIDI tracks Output window without having to even create a bundle first. If you DO create a bundle, the device will simply be listed twice.

In DP8 on Win7 x64, in the MIDI Monitor I can see DP is receiving data on only those channels just as it should. Now I want to control three different VI's from the three different controllers. On the Mac version it's easy because you can set a device as a MIDI track input and the VI as the out (because Mac has the Audio MIDI control at the system level. But in windows DP8 you can't select an input for a MIDI track. So by default with the VI (let's say a Kontakt library sample) receiving all MIDI channels, all three of the USB controllers trigger the same sample through the same single MIDI track. SOoo...I go into Kontakt and change the MIDI setting from Omni to Ch3 (so that the pedals will trigger it but not the keys or brain). Now nothing triggers the VI. It seems to be all three USB devices control if or none at all. I try this over and over with SSD drum player, Omnisphere, Trillian and BFD. It's always the same. If I set the MIDI tracks output to Kontakt-3 for example then all three controllers send to Kontakt only if it's set to receive ch 3 or omni. Otherwise nothing. I canNOT get DP to control one VI from one controller even if I only have one VI instrument added and only one MIDI track!

This makes no sense to me. If I touch the pedals the little "3" lights up in the MIDI monitor next to its name. If I touch the drums, the "10" lights up next to Drum Brain, but if I set the SSD drum library to receive on Ch 3 and the MIDI track output is not set to "SSD-3". I hear nothing. If I DO set the MIDI track output to "SSD-3" then ALL THREE devices trigger the drum samples.

Why is this so hard to set up. How should I do it? If a VI is set to receive on CH3 and only the pedals are sending on CH3, then ONLY the pedals should trigger it, yes? What the heck?

In DP, set Multi Record on if you want to select a MIDI input for tracks. Menu Studio -> Multi Record or ctrl-shift-Win-M. It's the same as the Mac.

And/or if you want to use MIDI channels, in Preferences set MIDI Patch Thru to 'Direct Echo' rather than channelize (I think that's it - haven't used that option).
