Do I need a faster video card ?

Post by Gone To Lunch »

I use Digital Performer 7.2.4, on my pre-intel PPC G5 Quad, and often work in the QuickScribe (score) window, which takes ages to refresh, such that it can take up to 10 bars before the screen catches up with the score as it plays back.

The four cpu Activity monitors are between 50 and 60 % when the latency between the sound and the score display happens, so does that suggest a faster card might improve this ? (They are generally between 50 and 60 anyway)

Editing of individual notes is also painfully slow. So I am hoping that a faster card would reduce this visual latency problem ? (I have 12gb of RAM, and my current card is a GeForce 6600.

On http://www.barefeats.com/mutant4.html they recommend The best option for your Dual-Core or Quad-Core G5 with PCIe slots is the ATI Radeon X1900 G5 Mac Edition released in November 2006.

It couldn't hurt. I certainly got better video performance when I upgraded the card in my aging Mac Pro.

The questions become:

1. how much will that GPU cost?
2. can you even find one for sale?

Compare to what you might spend to move to a used Mac Pro (3,1, or later suggested), or a Mac Mini or iMac. You can look here for some current pricing: http://www.macofalltrades.com/Refurbish ... ps-s/2.htm

You may be best served by an overall update that is still very affordable. You may be shocked at the gains in performance available for a modest outlay. That said, I used my G5 Quad for DP with great success for many years; it is one very solid computer and, IMO, one of the first that truly delivered on the promise of native DAW performance.

Thanks, I already know about upgrading to a mac pro.

I am interested to hear the experience of others who upgraded the card in their G5 PPC Quad as I asked in my OP ?
