Unreadable data error (need jedi)

Post by Fibes »

I'm a long time user, this is my first catastrophic issue with DP all others have been "undoable."

Mix session with fast turnaround, file and hand dragged back up borked.
An error occured while reading from the disk the file was not loaded.

Unreadable datawas encountered when reading the file.
Yes, I shoulda had a third back up, we have the original session backed up offsite but the overdubs and all mix data we did are gone.

I've tried:

Drag file to a new drive.
Repair permissions.
Dump all audio files to the trash
dump all analysis and undo as well.
Load chunks does not work, it gives the error when I select that session to load from.
Open in safe mode does not work, neither does MIDI only.

This record was done, all I had to do was bounce the final revisions of 5 songs.

Any things I haven't tried? I cant find my DP7 installer disk to load an older version of 7 from. (I'm on DP7.24 and Mavericks)

Thanks!

I suggest contacting Dave Roberts at MOTU (MagicDave). Sometimes he has been able to get a file open that was hosed on my system.

But this does sound really serious. I wish you the best of outcomes.

Meanwhile, let me ask you some questions. If you feel like I'm on the wrong path, feel free to ignore my questions. I don't want you wasting time on redundant stuff that won't help.

First: what is your OS?

Second: How many chunks are there? You said something about 5 songs. Is each song in its own chunk?

3) if the answer to #2 is not "1," then: have you tried loading one chunk at a time?

4) do you have autosave turned on?

5) if #4 = "yes," then have you looked for incremental backups that might open?

6) do you save backups regularly? ...As in "every time you start working, you save-as a new file with that day's date on it." If not, then start doing that. And turn on autosave so that you get incremental backups from it, too.

7) Do you have Time Machine? Does it back up your DP files? If "yes," start combing through it for the latest version that still works.

8 ) This is a long shot, but you might check the trash to see if there is a recovered DP file in it. On a few occasions I've found one there that rescued important work from the past couple of hours that would have been lost. I don't know if they still do that, though.

I think my basic question revolves around backups, since it appears that your #1 file is hosed. Have you gotten this far in a project without any backups? I won't harp on that. If the answer is "yes," then you're already kicking yourself hard enough that I don't have to. Minimally, you should be able to go back at least to the day before the file died. That's the bare-minimum backup scheme, and you would only have lost that day's work.

I do hope you find a way out of this situation. If you have no backups, well... next time you'll not make that mistake. Best of luck!

Thanks Shooshie, you're preaching to the choir.

I normally have 3-5 backups of projects rolling, this one is the exception, recorded elsewhere, random overdubs here, short time frame for mix and a bit of What the heck?

I was set to print all of the mixes at 7pm, 7:15 the drummer shows up and decides to overdub some shaker and tambourine on an already finished record. He spends several hours yapping and I get everything sitting in the mix and edited in place. It's the wee hours of the morning and rather than print the album on stale ears I drag a copy to the external and go home.

The next day we get the error from hell.

Ordinarily I'd have two copies at home of a project tracked here, this is a lesson learned. Don't sleep.

After 28 years this is a first for me, don't take anything for granted, even the most diligent folks can have this happen.

Oh, believe me, I know. There's not even a tinge of moral high ground in my response. Just sympathy.

You said you made a copy of the file on an external drive. Was there another copy? I know you'd have gone there first, but I'm just trying to understand this thing. Did both copies get the error?

But you removed audio files and STILL got the error, right? Yeah, you said you tried all the tricks. Have you called MOTU?

Is this error related to error 39?

I had this one twice and it was unrecoverable.
It hasn't happened in DP8 yet, so I'm hopeful.
So sorry to hear you had the problem.
It is a major drag.
All is well

You cannot run any version older than DP 7.24 on Mavericks.

You should really find your install CD. You would need it to reauthorize if restoring in most cases. Although only 7.24 will authorize in OS 10.7/8/9, any DP 7 CD will allow you to authorize once 7.24 is installed.

My recommendation is to uninstall and reinstall DP. First run the uninstaller from the 7.24 updater (run the installer till you get to the drop down menu - uninstall will show up). Next, run it from your install CD if not 7.24. Since the 7.24 updater is not a complete install, you need to run both. You do not need to run any of the intermediate installers, only your CD and the 7.24 updater. Now reverse the process, installing from your install CD, then running the updater. Mavericks has not asked me to reauthorize but I can't guarantee that your system won't. In earlier OS, an uninstall and reinstall always asked me for the CD as does a Time Machine restore.

I had to do this after the Mavericks 10.9.1 updater and it fixed me right up. Another time, I decided it was time to uninstall DP 5 and 6 - this caused problems with 7 and doing the above got me running again.

If you ever have the issue where DP 7 cannot find installed plugins that you have used before, especially the MOTU plugs, doing the above will solve the problem. I think that first happened to me in OS 10.6.x.

I haven't gone beyond 7.24 yet.

Magic Dave is at MusikMesse and no one at MOTU can get the file to open.

I may be out of luck.

I can count the times that has happened to me on one hand with a finger or two left over, but it HAS happened, and I know the feeling. Sometimes, despite our best efforts to preserve our work and rescue a file, it just ends up dead. RIP, old file!
