Open Console and see what is going on when things bog down.

Certain slow down issues are fixed by doing a Safe Boot and then rebooting.

Last weekend, a new install o TechTool Pro 7.02 brought my machine to a crawl and caused issues with my Magic Trackpad and waking from sleep. Resetting the NVRAM (PRAM) fixed me right up.

Since TTP 7.02 fixed some issues that were present since 6, I was glad not to have to uninstall it to get back on track. I only use it to diagnose hard drive and memory problems but that was the functionality that was compromised due to a firmware bug affecting some Apple ATi 5770 cards.

The only other program I use that has an issue with the firmware bug is MOTU Audio Setup. The workaround is easy: close it when you are done with setting up your system - failure to do so can cause your system to crash. MicroMat has a list of the affected video cards.
