MIDI Editor - track selection question

I have a question about the MIDI editor.

Say I have a sequence with 20 MIDI tracks and all the tracks have a bunch of MIDI notes in them.

I then go into the MIDI editor and it's showing all 20 tracks.

In the MIDI editor, I have track 1 set for editing. I then click on a note in a different track.

Is there somewhere that shows what track this note is on? And is there a way to have that track selected in the Track Selection window when I click on that note?

Right now, if I have track 1 set for editing and I click on a note that's in track 2, track 1 is still selected and I have no idea what track this other note is on.

I searched the help file and the web and clicked everywhere in DP, but no luck. I'm sure I'm missing something somewhere!

Have a look at the Track Selector. It will let you select which tracks show up in the edit window, and which is the "master" track, the one that gets the pastes, etc. You can activate it from a small icon in the lower left of the edit window. Best to read up on it in the manual first, and get the preferences for it set the way you want it to work. You can also help distinguish tracks while in the editor with multiple tracks showing by using track colours. The track colour will be used for the MIDI events.

The question I have is:

I have 20 MIDI tracks showing their notes in the MIDI editor. Several tracks are similar (they're all brass instruments), so their colors are similar (different shades of green for example).

I currently have track 1 selected as the Master Track. If I click on a note that is NOT on track 1, is there a way to tell what track that note is on? Or, better yet, is there a way to have the Master Track follow the MIDI Note selection?

The reason this is a concern for me is that I normally have over 100 MIDI tracks in my template (orchestral stuff), so many tracks have colors that are similar to each other.

(BTW, I'm using the trial version right now)

Sorry I missed the intent of your question. The track name would be a nice addition to the Event Window or Event Bar in the Edit Window, and that would do what you want.

I don't think it hasn't come up as an issue to me. I have DP set to play a note when I click on it, so that tells me what tracks it's on, or more importantly, what instrument it is playing.

ok, cool...thanks for the info. I currently use Cubase, so it automatically switches to the proper track when you click on a note.

Yeah, I was hoping that the Event Window or the Info Bar at the top of the editor screen would show the track name, but no luck.

I'll try your idea of having DP play the note to determine what track the note is on. I think that'll work just fine, espcially since I have DP play the note anyway.

I was hoping I could tell you that clicking on the note would create some activity on the Tracks Window level meters. But sadly it only activates the VI's and other audio meters, but not the MIDI track's level meter. Too bad, as that would have been a cool work-around to have those meters parked over on the side.

The Mixer will show levels when clicking on a note as you describe. Can you keep the mixer open? The channel strip won't do it, however.

NOT correct! My apologies. I use Aux tracks to return each VI output. Those do respond when click on a note in the associated MIDI track. The MIDI track meters show no action.

Thanks for the idea about the mixer, but...

I tried it and the MIDI channels in the Mixer only show activity when you play the sequence, not when you click on a note. The VSTi that the MIDI track is hooked up to DOES show activity all the time.

The problem is that I've got over 100 MIDI tracks and they're all linked to Kontakt instruments! lol! So 16 different MIDI channels show activity in one Kontakt mixer channel.

The mixer idea would definitely work for MIDI tracks that are linked to other VSTi synths though.

Oh well I've been messing around with this for awhile and the idea of just clicking on the note to hear the instrument actaully works well enough.

My apologies, you are correct. I use Aux returns for each VI output and I was looking at the aux track meters respond to a note click. No action on the associated MIDI track.

I agree this needs to be a feature request.

One technique I've used to identify the track after clicking on a note in the MIDI Editor is to hit Shift-D to go into the Drum Editor. The MIDI tracks are all listed out there, and it will scroll the the active note, though you may have to scroll up a bit to see the track name. Then Shift-G to go right back. You get fast at this.
