Getting error after upgrading to 4.61

Post by snicka »

I am getting the following error on playback now that I have updated DP.

"Audio playback has overloaded your computer's processor. Digital Performer has detected an error in the audio. Samples may have been dropped." Etc, etc.

Why am I now getting this error? Is anyone else getting this after they upgraded?

I am on a Dual 2.3Ghz G5 with 2.5GB RAM.

I have the same computer you do. I have had no problems with the 4.61 update.

Could you give us the rest of your setup - additional internal drives or FW drives, any USB peripherals, your audio interface, what kind of projec ts you're loading (any VI's or CPU in tensive plug-ins, etc.)

Sure.

I have 2 internal SATA drives, one for the OS and one for VI samples. I also have 2 external FW800 drives in a RAID 0 array that I record audio to.

I am using a MOTU 2408mk3 with 2 USD peripherals, an Oxygen8 and a MOTU MIDI Express XT.

I have 2 Presonus DigimaxLT's and I am syncing everything with an Apogee Big Ben using Word Clock.

The project is 11 tracks of audio. I am not using any VI's but I am using various Waves Ren plugins and iZotope Ozone on the Master fader.

I only get the error on playback.

I do not get the error using the same hardware/plugin setup under 4.52.

Since most people are reporting smooth transitions to 4.61, I'd say there's some kind of wacky voodoo with your particular system, or your project file is corrupted. It's not DP's fault, in my opinion.

Try the usual - repairing permissions, re-installing DP 4.52 and then re-installing 4.61. Try a new project, record some audio and see if you get playback problems with the new project. If you have no problems then I'd say it's very likely the project file you are having trouble with is corrupted, or simply just "doesn't like" to playback in 4.61. It sounds simplistic and silly but frankly I've come to this kind of conclusion over many years of working with computer audio - sometimes something just doesn't "like" an update, and the reason isn't apparent.

If all else fails, go back to 4.52 for the time being to finish up your projects
you started in that version.

As much as I love the new features in 4.61, I could have easily been happy continuing with 4.52.

Thanks for the tips.

I actually did a clean re-install of the OS and all software and still get the same issue. I always repair permissions after each new software install.

I'll keep experimenting to see if I can pinpoint when and why this is happening.

Thanks.

Have you moved that audio to your VI drive and test the data transfer that way.....Just to elimate the FW800 interface....

Same issues here since upgrading to Tiger and DP4.6 , same problems with a fresh install of DP 4.5.2 , my set-up was flawless under 10.3.9.

Try running Disk Warrior - it solved the playback issue for us.

Is there a 4.6 version and now 4.6.1 upgrade? Or are they the same?

I'm getting the same error.

Weird dp 4.6.1-errors!

Post by soundbiter »

Just installed 4.6.1-upgrade, on my ned fresg tiger install.
(Using G5, 2x2ghz, 1.5 GB Ram Motu 828, with 2x 250 HD`s)
I`m getting the silly errors too..."To manny audiofiles open"etc.. when i record like 7 audiotracks..
On my old system 10.3.9, everything was ok, and recording 16 audiotracks in one go was all fun...no troubles...
I also get "Playback error, when i set the buffers to 512...somthing that has never happened before....this MUST be DP...
I also run Diskrepair after installing new stuff....and I have trimmed the system, to minimize cpu-usage.
All worked smoothly untill 4.6.1...
any idea? maby somone knows what this is?
BTW. I have also Logic pro on the same computer, but not open at the same time...
Buhuuu....

Same Error here too!! ugh!

Post by orlando_remixer »

I'm using a DUAL 2.5 Powermac G5 (1,25 Ghz Bus)
512 RAM

I know I need more RAM, but this error should NOT be occuring.

It suggests increasing the MAS buffer. Anyone recommend some settings to eliminate the error? Thanks!

I'm reposting this that I wrote in a similar thread a couple of weeks ago. I lost the quote attributions, but you'll get the idea:

Quote:
There are a number of things that temporarily fix the CPU spiking problem, but for most people they eventually come back. My problem with that goes away when I change the hardware setup, but returns about 5 minutes later. It has only begun doing this (again) in 10.3.9 and Tiger, and in DP 4.5. While I was using 10.3.2 or so, with DP 4.12, the problem went away for a long time.
---------------------------------------------

Yes it started slowly for me on my G4 dual 1.25, on DP 4.6. Almost like a virus or degenerative disease. You'd think you'd solve it with a workaround and it would start again a few days later. And only with certain types of files and not other (more complex ones).

Quote:
Another "fix" was to use the Aggregate Device setup in Apple's Audio-MIDI Setup, but this caused some strange bugs to emerge for a lot of people, myself included. I had to reinstall my entire OS and software on a clean disk to get past those bugs.
----------------------------------------------------------

I tried Aggregate Devices. Ouch. That's when my system REALLY went to hell in a handbasket and never quite recovered. The spiking (eventually) would happen playing back 4 mono tracks with no plugs whatsoever and to the point "Playback Has Been Stopped...".
On and off spent about a month troubleshooting doing lots and lots and lots of stuff. I really can't think of anything I didn't try - except emailing MOTU...

I finally resolved it by not only going back to 4.5, but also doing a ground up reinstall of OS10.3.9. That's the only thing that fixed it. Interestingly, even a fresh 10.4.2 install with 4.5 still had the spikes
I can't prove anything but I believe it has to with DCPUM as has been stated here many times. The other things that led up to and I believe might be related are:
1. switching between different interfaces on the same computer and
2. Aggregate Devices. [Aggravating Devices?]

Ultimately under all this -and this is conjecture- I think all this may be CoreAudio (i.e. Mac) related - or the way MOTU is interfacing with CoreAudio. But who knows.

Nary a hiccup on my G5/4.6/10.4.2/UAD-1 though - all these problems were G4-only for me. All in all my G5 has been infinitely more solid and stable than my G4 in my experience.

Mess a bit with the Host Buffer Multiplier and general buffer settings to see if you see any change..

I second the advice for higher buffer settings in the Hardware Setup window. VIs work better at lower settings, but Waves for example requires a minimum of 512 setting. Try 1024 or 2048 as a general setting and see if the problems still occur.
