Calculate Tempo to Hit Marker.
Hello forum,
In DP 8.05:
I'm trying to do tempo calculation from Marker (music In), to next - Marker (music Out).
The End Time field reads 0:31:08:00 and Tempo calculated is 100.90 (see picture)
http://s1331.photobucket.com/user/sica2 ... sort=3&o=1
Screenshot #2, I changed the "End Time" field to 0:31:01:00, but Tempo is still 100.90. Is this a bug? See next picture.
http://s1331.photobucket.com/user/sica2 ... sort=3&o=0
Can anyone confirm?
Also, sent tech link to MOTU,
Thank you

Re: Calculate Tempo to Hit Marker.
If I am understanding your post, you are setting the end time, but are you hitting OK so DP can make the change? Until you do that, the tempo will be that of the source material.

Hi MLC and thank you for replying.
In previous versions of DP, when tabbing in the "End Time" field to change the values, the tempo used to change accordingly, before clicking "OK," no?
I thought that's how it used to work in DP 7.
Thank you,
Adriano

I don't recall it ever working that way (IE- a "preview" of the resulting tempo).

Hello MLC,
I'll pull the DP 7 manual and check it out. I really don't want to install DP 7 just to see if it previewed the tempo before clicking "OK."
Thank you for the fast reply,
Adriano

FWIW, I keep a copy of 7.24 installed just in case. If I can check it out for you I will.

Re: Calculate Tempo to Hit Marker.
You're on! ☺
I checked and it is the same but my question is what are you ultimately looking to do?
When I working with MIDI and have a work that is a certain length and I want to have that conform that to a new length, I use the SCALE TEMPO or SCALE TIME from the REGION menu and let DP do the time calculations. That's a huge time saver, especially on tight cues for picture, commercials that have to be very specific in length, and other such projects.

Re: Calculate Tempo to Hit Marker.
Hi MLC,
I'll try to be as clear as I can.
Let's say: music starts at 1/1/000 (frames 00:20:15:09), I'll drop my first "Marker" then, I'll advance in the movie at 6/3/385 (frames 00:20:27:03) and here, I'll drop the hit "Marker" where music is out and a new scene starts.
I am trying to see how close DP calculates tempo to the tempo I am actually wanting to use.
So far, I've managed to hit the marker and using my desired tempo by starting the music on a -1 measure.
I think, I'm approaching this wrong. Hack, that's what practice it's for.
On your last reply you mentioned SCALE TEMPO or SCALE TIME. I need to look at this up
Again, Thank you for the prompt replies.
Adriano

Re: Calculate Tempo to Hit Marker.
Well, again, it depends on your process. I start out by watching a scene and hearing the music, however sketchy, in my head. I get the tempo of what I want and plug it in and start counting how many measures it adds up to. Changing at that point to different meters can make a big difference as well.
In any event, once I have my ballpark number of measures and tempos, I stop watching the film and play a rough draft and then test it out against the picture. At that point a little tweaking might be involved but the tempo and length are pretty much set (unless I scrap the whole plan and start over, of course).
That process is not for everyone and sometimes I just play w/o regard to the tempo or meter (shutting the metronome) and figure out what i want from the free improvisations or less "to the beat" renditions.
My process in Finale when scoring for real musicians is somewhat different - but that's for another forum.

Yes, I've been doing this as well. It takes a little longer but it works.MIDI Life Crisis wrote:Well, again, it depends on your process. Excellent tip, MLC. I did not think of improv and no metronome. I'm fine at improvising while the scene is rolling. That's a great one.MIDI Life Crisis wrote:That process is not for everyone and sometimes I just play w/o regard to the tempo or meter (shutting the metronome) and figure out what i want from the free improvisations or less "to the beat" renditions.

Re: Calculate Tempo to Hit Marker.
Improvisation (formally call extemporization) was expected by all the great composers of the past. I thinking about folks like Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Schubert, Chopin, Debussy - you get the drift. It was, and for some of use remains, a most important compositional tool. That along with keyboard skills.
Those guys improvised (if logic exists at all in such matters) in the styles they were also writing in. I've spent the greater part of my life (maybe 40+ years) developing (dare I say mastering...) improvising in those styles. That is what got me through many years as a theater & dance composer/accompanist, and more recently, as a silent film composer/accompanist.
I do keep a foot in the theater, sometimes with standup comedy these days, which is a lot of fun - especially when you get to work with talented folks. That's all pretty much improvised, but riffing off a comedian. It's a very odd place to find oneself as a love performer and again, not for everyone.
'Composition" for me is, in many instances, the result of a repeated improvisations that get more and more refined with practice until it's a new work. Very old world, and a lot of fun!
