Maverick Questions

Post by Dan Worley »

I went from SL to Mavericks so I'm behind on a lot of this stuff.

First question:
With Mission Control taking the place of Spaces, can I no longer set a default desktop/space for my apps to launch to? Like, if I wanted DP to launch in Desktop 1, and my DSP mixer in Desktop 2, and Firefox in Desktop 8, and Thunderbird in Desktop 7, and so on.

Do I have to now arrange them each time?

Thanks

Click and hold the icon in the dock, and select Options. In there use the "assign to" function to pick a desktop where the app opens.

This is a good source of tips for OS X. It recently answered this particular question.

I'm still struggling with Mission Control. I assign an app to a desktop, quit the app and it launches to the desktop I'm on or into Desktop 2. I've tried with both Apple and non Apple apps. It just does not work.

I'm sure MC will be powerful at some point, with all its "extra features," but right now I miss Spaces.

I'm also having trouble with how the Dock is behaving. Once an app is open and I want to switch back to it, I have to click on it twice to see it. The first click makes the app active and loads its menu but none of its windows appear, the second click shows the windows. Maybe there is some setting I'm missing. I hope so, but I don't think so.

Don't know what that would be. The only thing you have to do is make sure the desktop you want to use is active and then assign the app to it. There doesn't appear to be any other way to do it. It certainly works for me.

Switching apps: haven't seen that either. I know some apps don't appear active when you switch to them, but they do that with or without the use of spaces/mission control. Again, it works as expected here.

Mission control is unusable for me. There are some obvious problems with this OS install for me, probably due to upgrading from 10.6.8 directly to Mavericks. I'll have to sort it out later. As long as DP works (and it is), I'm happy. I was worried about my RME card, but it works perfectly, too.

Now that I got rid of all the extra desktops, the Dock is working just fine again. One click switching is back. It's amazing how a small thing like that can throw us off.
