Re: CD Burning Issue
+1 for iTunes. I use it every day to make reference CDs for clients, and me. I use Wave Editor right now for Redbook CDs, but that's going to change sometime soon, since they took that away from me.
I don't actually care for the new iTunes interface, or some of the crap that's been added, but it still does what I need it to do.
Now I have things set up, so as soon as I do a virtual or real-time bounce, the mix-file automatically goes into iTunes, is converted to MP3 for email and the wav is put into a playlist for CD burning. Love it!

Thanks to everyone helping on this issue. However, I'm giving a "Wow!" shoutout to Dan Worley for the abovementioned setup. Can you tell me how you attained that setup/combination?Dan Worley wrote:+1 for iTunes. I use it every day to make reference CDs for clients, and me. Also: should I make .wave files, AIFF, or MP3 to get this into iTunes for these quickie burns?

10.6.8 here, mikehalloran wrote:I've used an old version of Jam (that used to be separate from Toast). It works well. Don't know if that's an option in this OS
Still have my copy of Jam 6.whatever, the last version. I know it doesn't work anymore but don't recall if OS 10.4 or 10.5 was the last.
but
only with the mac onboard soundcard
Trying to use it with 896mk3 crashes Jam ... sooner or later

Re: CD Burning Issue
Another dandy little iTunes tip is to... "snip the tip". Like most people, I tend to start my sequences at measure 4 (I then set the first measure of the sequence to -3 so the track starts at "1"), but that's usually a good 8 seconds of silence.
Well, after you've imported a track to iTunes, go to "Get Info" and you can check "Start At", and enter a second or so before the sound begins. The track doesn't automatically snip itself, but if you then "convert" it to a WAV or AIFF, it will only write the material after the start point! I just delete the original, and go from there. From there it gets mp3'd to Dropbox for other people involved to demo.
About the only thing I dislike about iTunes is the fact that you have to go to preferences every time you switch formats. I'm CONSTANTLY switching between WAV and MP3, as my workflow suggests. It would be nicer if there was a "convert..." option, which took you to a small option screen where you could select a file type.
Oh, one last word, if you're just demoing for CD or web, don't bother with anything above 44.1kHz and 16bit audio. From what I've heard, iTunes just down converts everything above those, and I KNOW i-devices do this as well, it just takes up more space, and I'm sure that iTunes' sample converter isn't as good as DPs, so might as well do it in DP. I don't bother outputting anything higher than that until I'm making the final pre-master.

You'll need to get the little app Hazel. They have a full-featured demo.
I always use Broadcast WAV files, but AIFF is fine, too.PJHarmonic wrote:Also: should I make .wave files, AIFF, or MP3 to get this into iTunes for these quickie burns?

You should be able to do much the same thing with existing iTunes features, post V9.Dan Worley wrote:http://www.motunation.com/forum/viewtop ... 97#p452797PJHarmonic wrote:Can you tell me how you attained that setup/combination?
1. Save your exports to the folder named Automatically Add to iTunes which can be found in the iTunes Music or iTunes media library.
2. Create a Smart Playlist that will look for some characteristic of the files you add.
Now when a file is placed in the folder above, it will appear in the playlist.

Re: CD Burning Issue
I wanted a one-stop shop. All I have to do is Bounce and everything is done. No need to export or anything else. Works great! The only draw back is you have to set it for each project. That takes thirty seconds once you have the first one done, but it's amazing how often I will put it off.bayswater wrote:You should be able to do much the same thing with existing iTunes features, post V9.Dan Worley wrote:http://www.motunation.com/forum/viewtop ... 97#p452797PJHarmonic wrote:Can you tell me how you attained that setup/combination?

It is one stop Dan. You set the folder mentioned above as the bounce destination.Dan Worley wrote:I wanted a one-stop shop. All I have to do is Bounce and everything is done. Oh, I see. Thanks. I didn't know about those features in iTunes.bayswater wrote: It is one stop Dan. You set the folder mentioned above as the bounce destination.
The only thing is, I don't like bouncing to my system drive, and I like to keep the bounces in the project folder. But that's just my preference.
The way I have it now, the bounces are stored with the project, a duplicate is automatically made and added to iTunes, the wav file is converted to MP3, so I have both the wav for CD burns and the MP3 for emailing or transferring to an iDevice. All this is completed in about twenty seconds of the bounce. I really like it. The only thing I don't like is that it switches over to iTunes when it's done with the conversion. I wonder if there's a way to stop it from doing that.
I bet I can make some good use out of the Smart Playlists.
Thanks.

Re: CD Burning Issue
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone. iTunes came through, and, yes, it IS DP's technical fault because the CDs burn just fine on my Superdrive through iTunes (which is weird to me for a app that costs as much as DP...but, whatever). I'll probably Roxio my way to Red Book.

Re: CD Burning Issue
Wow, I can't believe it. I tried all day yesterday to get DP to burn a simple CD correctly. And of course I forgot that I could just come to the forum.MIDI Life Crisis wrote:CD burning in DP has been completely unreliable since it was first implemented. It's a great idea but put simply: it just doesn't work.
Get a dedicated app like Toast or even burn via iTunes and just forget DP as a reliable burner. It's not the media. It's not the OS. It's not you. It's DP. That is the answer.
Many thanks.

Re: CD Burning Issue
I wish they'd fix that and also allow burning directly from any format and sample rate. It's not rocket science. Scoring to picture means you're in 48k/24bit much if the time. Converting a project with 2 hours of cues to 44k makes no sense when Toast can burn bounced files at the project format (which is very fast to bounce in DP) in an instant.
This is by far one if the weakest links in DP, IMO. Markers as tracks would be awesome.

I read that they fixed CD burning in 8.05. Can't say I've tried it, though. I am just used to doing it in Toast now.

Re: CD Burning Issue
I'm surprised to hear that. I've done several live projects over the years with no breaks and I've simply chopped up with markers in DP and bounced each section as a separate song, set the time to zero in between songs (in toast) and burned "disk at once" with flawless results. Can't remember if I even tried to listen back in toast, but if the sound files were right the final disk was seamless. I always use aiff files. The first time was in '97 or '98 and the last time was 2012.mikehalloran wrote:Like many, I use Toast.
Toast has an interesting, if annoying, issue. If you have fades, you can preview, tweak and get them to play back perfectly. When you listen in regular playback, the transition between tracks not be smooth at all. The CD you burn will play back perfectly.
The only time I do this is when the artist does a medley and I want the various parts to have different track numbers. A good example would be movements 3-5 in Beethoven Symphony 6. DP creates the three parts very easily and playback is perfect. Dropping the three parts into Toast and setting to 0 won't do it but you can easily get it right in the Fade window. The resulting CD will be perfect but, when listening to the Toast file on your Mac, you'll hear the transition.

Re: CD Burning Issue
It took some getting used to but it performs exactly as I say. Annoying as hell if you listen back in Toast. No problem if you don't. Perhaps Corel will fix this in the next version - if there's a next version. Toast 11 is still the latest release and, except for that, works pretty well.zandurian wrote:I'm surprised to hear that. I get the occasional freeze that requires a force-quit in Mavericks. At first, I found a loose power cable to my external burner and fixing that fixed most of it. Last week I had a web site cause weirdness in a number of programs, Toast being one of them. Again, a force-quit and restart fixed it.
