Open up project, press play...pop...no sound
Hey all,
This is exactly what happens when I open a project I've been working on for a long time, with no problems.
Today I open said project, hit play, I hear a pop, and no sound. The output meters on my Rosetta 200 are pegged, but no sound. I disable my 2Bus/main outs and I hear another pop, meters not pegged anymore, no sound.
Basically I have to delete my "main out/2bus" in bundles, then create a new one, disable all audio tracks, then reassign everything to the new main out bus, then enable each audio track one by one. Then I can continue working.
Has anyone else experienced this and is there a way to fix this?
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Re: Open up project, press play...pop...no sound
Whenever that happened to me (very rarely) it was a problem with a particular plug-in. I've had to remove whatever plug-in caused it and download an update for it (or revert to a prior version of it.) Can't remember which plug-in caused this for me, but that would be my first guess.
If this doesn't happen to you very often but only in this particular project, try looking through the project and find the plug-in that you rarely use or that you just updated. Save a copy of the project (for safety) then delete that plug-in. See if that solves it. You may have to try a few different ones.
Good luck!

On second thought, I'm thinking it was a VI for me, not an audio processing plug. But don't fully remember.
Keep us posted! Good luck!

Re: Open up project, press play...pop...no sound
Gonna try now. I just remembered I ran an automated Onyx task a couple days ago, which is when this started happening. Could clearing audio units cache cause this?

Ok so after trying various combinations of disabling audio tracks and enablin them one by one, removing plugins etc...I think I got it. And you were right Kubi. I removed plugins, saved the project, closed the project, then reopened and inserted all removed plugins (2 total) and everything seems to be working again. When the pop happened, it made 2 audio tracks spike. Those tracks I removed plugins from and did as I said before. Seems to be working, fingers crossed. Thank you!

Re: Open up project, press play...pop...no sound
Sounds to me still to be one of the two removed plugs - or both. When this happened to me it was erratic, but ultimately could only be fixed with an update of the offending plug. Which plug-ins are we talking about in your case?
For now, try to get them to work briefly, like you did, then immediately print the track so you can use it as simple audio for now, then save a copy of the project for safety and delete the track(s) with the problematic plug-in (or at least disable the tracks with the plug-in in it.)
Good luck!

Re: Open up project, press play...pop...no sound
Well...holy crap. Just spent an hour losing my mind then finding it again. So the plugins aren't the problem. It's The Bundles. Somehow, bundles got corrupted. Is this possible? I ended up rebuilding my bundles (holy craaaaaaaap!) and all seems to work now. I did this not bc of my original problem, but bc when I went to record audio from my 2Bus, I would get feedback loop. I spent the good part of an hour trying to see if I was being the dum dum. Nope. After rebuilding it fixed the feedback loop and the popping issue. Very odd. Anyone else experienced this?

Just kidding. Not fixed. Back to the drawing board. So annoying. Edit: sorry, after closing DP and reopening ths project, I get the pop and have to delete and rebuild my 2bus.

Re: Open up project, press play...pop...no sound
If you've updated OSX or DP since updating your third-party plugins, I would check for plugin updates released AFTER whatever version of OSX you are using.
My next step would be to delete the following two files:
User> Library> Preferences> com.motu.Digital Performer (folder)> MOTU Audio System Preferences
and
User> Library> Preferences> com.motu.Digital Performer (folder)> Preferences
Not sure of your version of OSX, but these days the User Library folder is hidden. If it doesn't appear (as unchecked) in the Finder's GO menu, then you'll have to dabble with the Terminal.
Copy/paste the following command and hit Return to show the Library folder.
chflags nohidden ~/Library
To restore the Library to hidden status, copy/paste the following and hit Return:
chflags hidden ~/Library
Also-- you might be able to just use Shift-Command-G to access the Go To Folder feature and enter:
~/Library
***
If the same problem persists in DP after deleting those two files and rebooting, I would reinstall the audio driver even if it's the same version.
After that, I would reinstall DP. If you are using DP8.x, the installers appear to be full installers, so you will only have to do one installation. In that past, you had to use your original installer disc and then install every update thereafter.
I would also run a file or drive test on the audio drive in question. Some people vote against defragmentation in favor of doing a complete backup, reformatting the drive, and copying the data back again. If you opt for the latter, just make sure the drive is journaled and has the EXACT same name as it had before. Otherwise, DP might have trouble with the directories.
It would be at this point I'd contact MOTU directly if these steps failed to fix the issue.

Re: Open up project, press play...pop...no sound
This sort of thing used to happen to me on number of projects, again erratically. It turned out to be the audio interface ( I'm using the MOTU 828 mk 2). There was not as much air flow as I thought in the rack, and it needed an extra cooling fan in the back. Since adding the fan, I have had no further problems. For what it's worth.

Maybe now would be a good time to get this machine to DP 8.05. Awhile ago I installed 8.02, then went back to 8.01 due to 8.02 running kinda sluggish. Maybe that's what did it? 8.01 has been great on my 2008 2.6 core2 duo mbp. Haven't had any problems actually in a very long time, so I didn't wanna update anything. Just afraid my computer won't be able to handle DP 8.05. In the meantime ill try what you suggested Frodo. Thanks for taking the time!
