This close to just upgrading and coming back to DP

Post by Dragonwind »

Former DP user...current LPX user...still have my DP7 and here's my situation.

I've sang this tune before but my beloved Logic X, which I run in Mavericks on a new Mac is so buggy that the score I am working on (professionally) is taking much longer than it should. Stuttering video (terrible) and freezes are not something I ever had to deal with before. The CPU usage has been the main thing keeping me around. I tried Cubase 7 for a while...sold it and continued using LP9 at the time.

I've downloaded the demo for DP8 but have only gotten some minimal time with it re-familiarizing myself with the layout. So far so good but I see I'll have to unload a lot more of my template to slaves.

Anyways just sounding out here...the frustrated loves company lol!

Chris,

We'd love to have you back on DP!

In addition to the amazingly helpful people on this forum, I'd like to extend a personal invitation to contact me directly any time if you have questions or comments regarding DP8.

Best,

Thanks Dave!
Well so far there are things I am trying to find in the manual as I go. One is compressing velocity by just holding a modifier key...well compressing CC data too. I think I found it but it also lets me expand/compress the notes too which isn't what I want to do.

We'll see how it goes.

CONTROL-SHIFT gets you the constrained proportional drag. Yes, it works in any direction with notes, controllers, velocities, or what-have-you, but the SHIFT key constrains to the first direction you move it. That's been my primary method of compressing velocities for over 20 years. It also enables quick and precise augmentation or diminution of phrases if you move the other way.

Ask if you can't find something. The manual's not the easiest place to find stuff until you kinda know their language.

Right as always - its all there in terms of what you want to do, but sometimes its hard to find out how, and to me the manual has always been a problem in terms of needing to know where to look as it is not always obvious. This forum is great for finding the shortcuts to working knowledge. You have to live with DP and find a way of working and it is not always that immediate. It took me years to suss out V Racks for example whereas now I don't think about it.

Is this a criticism of DP and the manual? The MOTU help videos have de-mystified some subjects which could have been more obvious and would actually be a major selling point (Pitch editing in the Sequence editor is awesome and yet for a while I didn't really know it was there or how to use it). And this forum helps a lot. I have always found the manual hard to read (perhaps its the layout that sends me to sleep) and not always logical as compared to Opcode Vision's manual (logical in the sense of the order you need to know things and where to find them). On the other hand there is a way of doing almost everything in DP - you just need help to find it at times.

Thanks guys. It is hard having been so used to Logic. I do wish there was a way to make the points that represent note on velocity bigger as they are bloody hard to see!
Oddly I don't remember it being that tiny. :)

I don't recall who posted it, but there was a theme modification file making the velocity marks easier to see. If no one else can remember where it is, I'll post a link if I can find a local copy of the file.

Select the notes, not the velocity points. Then use the Reshape tool (hold down the R key).

Sometimes you need to select the points, say, to select all the low velocities, but rather than clicking on them, drag a box diagonally around them, then it's easier to Shift-Click on the ones you DON'T want.

Shift key is your friend, but only in adding or subtracting to data selections. Be ready to slap down that shift key at any instant to preserve your selection, because here selections are your objects, your regions. They're like regions you can change at any time. We also have a Search feature that makes great and complex selections which you can save and use again and again. (even has a rhythmic grid for searching for and selecting certain note patterns in a rhythmic passage or a whole sequence)

In lists, use the Command Key, as with other Mac apps since the OSX revolution finally changed the way we do that. But DP is pretty much stuck with the Shift Keyfor actual data, because we already have the Command Key constraining things to grid, and that's hardwired into our brains now. No way we can change THAT! [you hearing me, MOTU? I said NO WAY we can change that!]

Have fun out there, and write us sometime!

It was me - I made the dots bigger based on what Andy had done. If he searches for it he will find the posting I made.
