Double-clicking mouse doesn't work [SOLVED]

Post by David Polich »

I'm having a really weird problem with my Magic Mouse, after upgrading to
ML on my Mac Pro. Intermittently, double-clicking to open something (a file
on the desktop, a track in DP's TO window, a Kontakt .nki) doesn't work.
Nothing happens. Single-click, right-click, left-click, scroll, those all work.

I've tried adjusting the mouse click speed in preferences, no joy. This is a brand new Magic Mouse. I'm really stumped...if anyone has an idea of how I might address the issue, it would be most welcome. Thanks!

The preferences need to be reset.

Pull up System Preferences, Mouse and click on Set Up Bluetooth Mouse.

You can also find the settings from the Bluetooth dropdown menu.

This is a little different than it was with earlier OS. I remember having to do it when I installed ML on my machines.

Thanks, Mike. It appears you have been providing helpful answers to a lot
of forum posts lately. Appreciated.

Unfortunately, resetting Bluetooth, unpairing and then re-pairing the mouse,
changing tracking speed, re-setting gestues, and swapping mice (including trying two Logitech USB mice) has had no effect on the problem.

After a whole day yesterday and this morning trying to fix it, including
searching every thread on the subject I could find on the web, it appears I
will just have to get used to life without double-clicking.
Sometimes it will work, most of the time it doesn't.

Fortunately I can navigate around DP by clicking on the various window tabs.

It's definitely something to do with upgrading to ML on my Mac Pro. I upgraded to ML on my Mac Book a few months before upgrading on my Mac Pro,
at that time ML was still available in the app store. And, on my Mac Book, I
can connect a Magic Mouse and double-click with no problems whatsoever.

Perhaps moving to Mavericks would fix it, but it might not, and until
I'm certain that all my VI's and plugs are Mavericks-ready, I'm staying
on ML.

Oi-vey.

Variations of those settings have been around since the Mac+ though not in as great detail. I sort of take it for granted that people know to look for those. It doesn't help that Apple hides these settings in various sub-menus now.

The good new: You can tweak the hell out of it. The bad news: you have to know where to look.

I ran into an interesting issue with my wife's computer and Lion when the mouse was exhibiting really strange behavior. There posts all over the 'net blaming everything under the sun and no real solution. Two support calls to Apple and two techs couldn't find it either. The third call, I found a tech who knew the answer: My wife's iMac was being controlled by my daughter's Magic Mouse. Interestingly, this couldn't be fixed in Lion but there were settings in ML that made the problem go away.

If it's a brand new mouse I'd take it back!

I missed that. Yes, take it back and Apple PAY FOR THIS! j/k but they might offer to "fix" the issue at an Apple store. They have geniuses, you know.

It was supposed to be funny. You know, kind of like a joke - just not as funny. Hey, I write music, not Leno's material. :)

Wow, MLC, thanks! The first link you posted gave me the solution - I
went to Accessibility>Mouse and Trackpad and adjusted the double clickspeed to about 90% (it was set at "Fast", all the way to the right).

Double-clicking problem gone.

I owe you guys a beer/margarita/drink of choice. Love this forum!
