Clone my 10.9 drive to new SSD?
My SSD will be here this weekend, I do not see why I can't just copy my whole boot drive to it and then reformat my old boot drive. I have never done this, have any of you guys? No issues doing it I hope?

I've done it, with 10.6.8, and it worked for me. I'd recommend saving the old drive intact as a backup.

Try 'Carbon Copy Cloner'. It just works.
I know you can use the built in Apple stuff, but 'CCC' does the job.
(Try it instead of 'Time Machine' too.... you'll like it!)

No, it doesn't.Try 'Carbon Copy Cloner'. It just works.

Carbon Copy Cloner not compatible with OS X 10.9.
Do it right. Apple recommends Time Machine or Migration Assistant.
Install your new drive. Use Apple Disk Utility to format it. Shut down. Hold the Option key when you restart and you'll be given the option to install the OS onto your new drive and copy from either a Time Machine backup or use Migration Assistant.
Before you do this, de-authorize any software that uses an internet authorization (Finale, MasterWriter, Final Draft in my case) or you'll be on the horn with tech support. Not an issue with iLok authorizations or DP 8 (the last two are always authorized) nor nic authorizations like Office.

As of Oct. 22nd it works with 10.9, it looks like the you get the same authorization issue with CCC.

I did it the way you said mikehalloran, wow it is like I have a new computer, programs load 10 times faster, everything loads super fast. I just finished but wow the whole computer acts like a major upgrade. SSD rocks!

Re: Clone my 10.9 drive to new SSD?
I'm in the process of checking out the compatibility of important software/hardware before I upgrade my MacPro to Mavericks. I just visited the Carbon Copy Cloner web-site and here's the latest news on it's newest update as of 10/22/2013 that should be useful.mikehalloran wrote:No, it doesn't.Try 'Carbon Copy Cloner'. For what it's worth, I have used CCC to clone my OS X drive (from my dedicated backup drive) to a new SSD (as well as HDDs in the past) and it worked quite well all of the time. Finally, having the OSX on a SSD rocks!

AFAICT, SuperDuper will do the job.
Free release will do fine for initial cloning.
Paid version will be much faster for updating backups, though.

I have never understood using it over Time Machine.Paid version will be much faster for updating backups, though.

Re: Clone my 10.9 drive to new SSD?
I use SD in addition to Time Machine.mikehalloran wrote:I have never understood using it over Time Machine.Paid version will be much faster for updating backups, though.
Time Machine has a nasty habit of telling me now and then it has done a check on my backup and decided I have to start a new one. At that point it makes all my TM backups unusable, so I can't get to old versions of files, or to files no longer on my active system. I know you will tell me this is a problem with my backup drive or network, and that may be, but it doesn't matter what the reason is, I lose the TM backup. And my SD backups are on the same drives and networks as the TM backups, and SD doesn't do this.
SD might fail, now and then, to complete a scheduled backup for various reasons, but I can tell it to just try it again, and that has always worked. And SD, unlike TM doesn't stop me from getting at backups it has already done. I have accessible cumulative SD backups for each of 4 active Macs going back to the day I set them up. My oldest TM backup is from October 2013.
At this point, I'm wondering, if I have SD with scheduled cumulative backups, why am I using Time Machine?

Re: Clone my 10.9 drive to new SSD?
Because, when TM is telling you that there are problems, it is right and you should be paying attention. Every time I have run into the issues you describe, I have found a bad drive. 100% of the time. Zero exceptions. It's like a canary in the coal mine.
Diagnosing them is difficult unless you have TechTool Pro. Problem drives will often pass SMART status and only TTP will access the parameters so you can see the problem. Because you can't access SMART data over Ethernet, USB or FireWire, you need to examine the drive via SATA to take a look. It's easy to pop out the drives in Time Capsules to examine them. I've only had one WD drive fail in the last 5 years but I've stopped counting the Seagate drives that failed including OE drives in Time Capsules. The screen prints from TTP end any argument before they begin.
Super Duper! and CCC have no problem writing to problem drives. I have a major issue with this.
I use SD! with school networks. I set up a master workstation and clone it to all the others in the classroom at the beginning of every year. It's great for that use.
Cloning as a part of a backup routine? Never ever ever ever ever...

Re: Clone my 10.9 drive to new SSD?
Here are some TTP screen shots of drives that Time Machine had problems with - but scored positive on a pass/fail SMART Status test. You could hit these with Disk Utility and repair them but a day/week or two later, they would all have problems again. These are a few of many. The 500G is an Apple OE. All are Seagate.

The last one hadn't failed - it was a two month old warranty replacement but was making the "Seagate sound". I could see where that was going and decided to cut my losses and stopped returning them under warranty.
