Using Apogee's Maestro software w DP??

Post by mjkeys1 »

I was hoping someone could pass along some steps in setting up a zero latency mix using DP and Maestro? I've read through a number of older posts, but none really explain how to do this? Currently, I'm hearing latency when trying to monitor using Maestro..which means I'm doing something wrong.

-btw..I can't lower my buffer. I'm currently at 256

Any specifics would be helpful.

Thanks

Maestro is completely independent of DP. It is just a digital mixer inside the Apogee, it's Apogee's version of MOTU CueMix. The only way you'll have 0 latency is if you build a mix of inputs bused directly to outputs within Maestro. See your Maestro manual, I'm sure it would discuss this.

You can't have 0 latency when you go through a native DAW like DP. That's why Maestro and CueMix exist to give you a workaround. Native is always getting better, but only a proprietary hardware system can do 0 latency through the software, like Pro Tools HDX. It'll probably be another 5 or more years before native can compete with proprietary on latency. You can see their latency figures here.

Thanks for your info...

I actually figured out how to route everything this morning. Only weird thing is my mic input. When Maestro is open, I need to crank my avalon M5 mic pre pretty high to get a decent level in DP. If I quit out of Maestro and talk into my mic...it's red-lining. Super hot. Something within maestro must be lowering the level somehow? In Maestro, my LINE 1 INPUT analog level is set to +4 dBU...which is what they said my setting should be if I'm using a pro mic pre. If I switch that to -10 dBU, the level is better, but Apogee said I should be using +4?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Redlining what? The Avalon, Apogee, DP? Quitting Maestro shouldn't alter levels. The Avalon max out is going to be >+24 dBu so +4 is the correct level setting on Maestro.

I would reset all Maestro levels. Sounds like you're attenuating somewhere in there.

I use Maestro's low-latency mixer with DP all the time and don't have this problem. Can you describe exactly how you're routing everything, both externally and within Maestro?

I do this a lot and I support the OP's position that it's confusing. I guess I was spoiled by CueMix, which is understandably nicely integrated w DP.

I find the Maestro software very confusing and prone to secretly muting certain outputs. I solved much of this headache by saving a Maestro configuration file which I load first thing.

I ran some tests and I seem to have gotten it working. I need to get used to it as the software still seems a bit uncomfortable for me....

Thanks for your response. I have a big vocal session tomorrow, we'll see how it goes...
