828 MK3 w/ Firewire no sound or visual response in or out

Post by thenickstarr »

Hello everyone,

I am running an 828 Mk3 Hybrid via firewire into an iMac with OS 10.5 and it has all of a sudden stopped giving me any audio in or out of the system. My last session I had to do a few complete restarts but as of today I can't get it to run at all.

Cuemix will launch and even though I'm getting input on the front panel of the 828, I have nothing getting into Cuemix. No audio or visual representation. I'm using Logic 8 and there is nothing getting into that channel either.

I have checked all cabling, etc. I'm running analog out 1-2 for my mains, which are assigned, firmware has been updated. I do see a message about bandwidth being exceeded, but I have turned off all of the ADAT. Besides, I've used both ADAT's simultaneously before and not had a problem... Running out of thoughts and hoping I don't have a defective unit. I've had it since May so it's not old and hasn't even had that much use.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks!

Ok I should add, when I launch the MOTU audio setup once I turn on the 828mk3, there is a message at the bottom that reads, "Bandwidth not available, please reduce the number of devices on the bus, reduce the sample rate, or disable some banks."

It doesn't always say this, only occasionally when I start up the MOTU. I have no ADAT cables even plugged in anymore, and they are disabled in the setup. Not sure why it's having problems...

If it says bus, that would indicate the FW bus. No matter how many ports you have, your iMac has only one FW bus. Try resetting the PRAM. This will reset the FW bus.

What else do you have on the FW bus?
DP 11.34; 828mkII FW, micro lite, M4, MTP/AV USB Firmware 2.0.1
2023 Mac Studio M2 8TB, 192GB RAM, OS Sequoia 15.4, USB4 8TB externals, Neumann MT48, M-Audio AIR 192|14, Mackie ProFxv3, Zoom F3 & UAC 232 32bit float recorder & interface; 2012 MBPs (x2) Catalina, Mojave
IK-NI-Izotope-PSP-Garritan-Antares, LogicPro X, Finale 27.4, Dorico 5, Notion 6, Overture 5, TwistedWave, DSP-Q 5, SmartScore64 NE Pro, Toast 20 Pro

TheNick : don't do anything with the PRAM.

- Is your 828 the only thing on the firewire bus?

- Have you tried using your 828 on the USB port.

- Can you route audio without firewire connection?

- If you can route audio in your 828 but cannot make connection (on the firewire port) with your Mac well.........you might have stumble on a burnt out firewire port. My 3 828MKIIs all did this in the same time frame (6 years)......even 1 that was never disconnected from the computer. Good news is that i have found a fix. It's a 2$ part. I've put a DIY thread on here that you can check.

Mike : you should stop talking about the PRAM with firewire problems. It's not even related. Here is what Apple says about the PRAM...

"Your Mac stores certain settings in a special memory area even if it is turned off. On Intel-based Macs, this is stored in memory known as NVRAM; on PowerPC-based Macs, this is stored in memory known as PRAM.

Information stored in NVRAM / PRAM includes:

Speaker volume
Screen resolution
Startup disk selection
Recent kernel panic information, if any

If you experience issues related to these functions, you may need to reset the NVRAM or PRAM. For example, if your Mac starts up from a startup disk other than the one you've specified in Startup Disk preferences, or if a "question mark" icon appears briefly when your Mac starts up, resetting NVRAM / PRAM may help.

Note: OS X does not store network settings in NVRAM / PRAM. If you are troubleshooting a network issue, resetting it will not help."

Yes, the MOTU is the only thing I've got on the Firewire bus. This was making me think that it was in fact the Firewire port on my computer and not the MOTU's problem.

I hooked it up via USB and everything worked like a charm, so I tried it back and forth Firewire and USB for a little while. The Firewire started working again...

As of right now, the MOTU audio setup has stopped giving me that message, but I will post again if I have more problems. I've got a personal laptop that I run with Logic as well so I can give that a try as a last resort to test things out.

Thanks for the replies!
