DP>>Soundflower/Interapp MIDI>>EXS24 library

Hi all, this may be 'old news' to some, but I'll mention it anyways!

I've come back to MOTU world (DP, MachFive3) after a few years 'away' in Logic-land, where I built up a nice library of sounds for the EXS24 sampler.

MachFive3 is amazing, but can't fully bring in some of my library very well, like Kirk Hunter orchestral samples and some other too.

So, I was dreading having to look at laying out some cash to get another orchestra library and going through the 'relearning' what works, etc.

Until...... VOILA!!..... it hit me!!!.... use DP Interapplication MIDI and 'Soundflower'!!!

Now, I can use Logic (8.02) as one big VI unit.... using EXS24 and accessing any other effects or instruments as well.

You have to delve into the Logic 'Environment' window a little, but it's very easy to make it all happen.

I tried it all with 'Mainstage' as well, and it works. But, the actual Logic interface is less cumbersome, and the CPU hit is negligible.

In fact, the CPU hit using Logic as a big VI is negligible.... less than opening up MachFive3! Now I can devote MachFive3 to it's amazing UVI library sounds, and not worry about hit and miss with some of the EXS importing.

Anyway, thanks for indulging me.... this is very exciting, and just saved me thousands of dollars!

If anyone wants to know any details, I'll let you know how it happens.

With some variations you can do the same with Logic and get access to EXS24. I assume this is more or less how you did it, but why not outline what you did, especially the bit where you tweaked the Environment?

Right, and yes, the 'DP>>Garagband via Soundflower' helped give me the idea!

For those trying this, here's what to do in the Logic Environment:

Once you open Logic, you have to open the 'Environment' window. Then, create a new 'Physical Object'.

This will bring up an icon interface (Physical Object) which should show any 'DP Output's' that you have created back in DP's Interapplication MIDI. (Create a lot of DP Outputs to control a lot of Logic instruments if needed.)

In the Logic Environment you should also see a 'mixing board' with some Logic instruments in it. If needed, go and create a bunch of new Logic instrument (or audio) tracks. Then, you'll see them show up in the 'Environment'.

Now, take your mouse, and look very carefully for the 'connecting cables' on the 'Physical Object'. They're very small, and you have to find the right cable for each 'DP Output'.

Then, you drag a 'DP Output' over to an instrument. Do this for each instrument that you want to control via DP's MIDI.

(You move the mixer/faders around in the Environment window to clean things up a bit while you do this to give a better view of what you're doing.)

I find that you need to use 'DP Output 1-1' for Logic Instrument 1; 'DP Output 2-1' for Logic Instrument 2-2'; etc. etc. etc.

You should be good to go after you make sure that each Logic Instrument then has a Soundflower Output going back to DP (as outlined in the Garageband article too.)

An incredibly useful thread, that I've just found, so thanks for posting.

I've been missing the Kirk Hunter libraries as well so it's really good to find a solution - which works in Logic Pro X as well. One thing I've found, though maybe it's obvious, is that you need to set 'record enable' off on the Logic tracks to avoid more than one playing at once. Also, setting the outputs correctly in Logic helps!

Logic does make a nice VI, and the new dark Logic X interface goes very well with 'The Nightman Cometh' theme.
