Wifi for Mac Pro

Post by westla »

So the Mac Pro I got doesn't have a Airport card installed. So I was looking around and reliable airport cards are hard to come by, and from the sound of it, hard to install.

So I was thinking of trying a USB WiFi adapter. Does anyone have suggestions? ANyone have experience with the NewerTech MaxPower USB Wireless Adapter from OWC?

I went through the same story about a year and half ago - bought a second hand MP that didn't have the card. After trying a few things, in the end I gave up and had the nice man at my local Apple store put in a card for me. I think all up it was <$150 or something like that, I am glad I did that in the end, it was worth the hassle and the cost. If you really don't want to do that, I suggest checking out OWC, they seem to have the most/best after market upgrade gear.
Cheers,
BK

…string theory says that all subatomic particles of the universe are nothing but musical notes. A, B-flat, C-sharp, correspond to electrons, neutrinos, quarks, and what have you. Therefore, physics is nothing but the laws of harmony of these strings. Chemistry is nothing but the melodies we can play on these strings. The universe is a symphony of strings and the mind of God… it is cosmic music resonating through 11 dimensional hyperspace.

I got one of these, installed in a PCIe slot - works great, fast, no driver needed.

That's what I would like, but here's the problem. (and I know little about this stuff).

From our DSL modem, we have a ethernet cable that goes to a Airport base to spread wifi throughout our house. So how would I get a second ethernet cable to go to my Mac Pro?

From Apple website:
Go the wired route if you want.
AirPort Express includes a 10/100BASE‑T Ethernet LAN port for fast wired connectivity with a desktop computer, network drive, DVR, or other device. And if you need more than one port, just connect an Ethernet hub.

I depends on how far your Mac is from your modem but you can pick up Ethernet cable cheap at discount electronic stores.
But beware these are one of those things that are way over priced in some places.

Unfortunately I have one of the older AirPort Express base stations - the kind that looks like a Macbook Pro plug - and it doesn't have the extra port for outgoing ethernet.

You should go CAT5 from your DSL modem directly to your Mac

But then I won't be able to get the DSL signal to the AirPort base station, and I'll lose wifi in our place.

Damn, I'm not living right - my DSL modem only has one port. Actually all the modems I've had over the years have only had one port.

Can't you put a hub ahead of your Apple WiFi device?
