"show all tracks"

Post by Morpheo »

There is something rather annoying that occurs each time I switch from the tracks tab to the mixing board and vice-versa. I like to have *all* my tracks *always* visible on the mixing board but if I select one track or more in "tracks" then the mixing board only shows these selected tracks - I always end up in the board layout submenu so I can "show all tracks". I feel like I'm asking a newbie question  but if there's a way to have the mixing board show all available tracks *all the time*, feel free to let me know... tx :)

I believe that if you could back version to 8.01, you'd see the behavior you're looking for. We've gone back and forth on this one and hopefully they'll offer a preference for the track selector behavior in a future release. I also prefer an independent track selector for the mixing board.

The only thing you can do now is take the mixer out of consolidated windows and leave it open all the time, or make sure you hit Command D (Deselect All) before switching to it.

I know, right? And yet, many users like that it works this way. They asked for it specifically. This is why it needs to be a preference.

In the future, I think whenever MOTU decides to change the way something works, that many of us are already used to, they should just automatically make it a preference instead of waiting for a bunch of us to complain. It also wouldn't hurt to enable search in the Preferences.

Not in my DP; only Select All works. Deselect All brings up the last selected track. Am I overlooking a setting?

"Show All Tracks" should at the very least be available as a key binding.

Look near the bottom of the Edit menu for Deselect All. I thought Command D was the default. Maybe yours got changed in the Commands, or I changed mine. I don't know.

Oh, but I think I know what you're saying now. Yeah, if you didn't have all the tracks open in the mixer before, Deselect All isn't going to make them all open if you use it before going back to the mixer.

It works in this sense: You're in the mixer and all the tracks are open. You switch to the TO to work and select some tracks. Hit Command D before switching back to the mixer and all the tracks are still open in the mixer.

Just noting that you can also take the TO out of the CW, or keep both open in the CW; more or less anything that keeps both open at the same time.

It's the only way that I can work.

With decent (OK, not great but decent) 23" monitors available in the $125-$150 range, having a second one just for my plug windows and mixer makes my work flow much better.

Can you put the CW in one monitor in full screen mode and keep the mixer in the other monitor?

If I try to simulate that arrangement with one monitor using Spaces, the mixer and other open windows move out of their virtual desktop and float on top of the CW, and can't be moved to other spaces. This arrangement works with Apple applications, you can have multiple full screen desktops within a single application, so I assume it's a problem with DP, not Spaces.

Yes. I never tried it before now but that works quite well. The mixer board and other floating DP windows on the 2nd monitor stay in place and do not change while the CW goes full screen on your main monitor. Pretty cool, actually.

The only downside is that it hides everything else on the second monitor in the process. I might be keeping session notes on Notes on the other screen and this would hide them. I happened to have Notes.app open when I tried full screen mode so I just noticed this.

It might be preferable for me to just drag the CW to full screen on Mon 1 and then my mixer and notes are both visible on Mon 2. Or not. Had I not read your question, I never would have checked it out. Now we both know.

I never use Spaces.

For a long time now I use window sets, tied to key commands. All of these window sets have the mixer open, outside of the CW, underneath the editing window in question, plus one of three edit windows full screen in the CW - TO, SE or Graph MIDI.

If I need a sidebar (edit list or audio inputs or whatever) I simply use the key command shift-something. To close any sidebars, edit windows, plug-in GUIs or anything else that's starting to clutter up things, I simply call up the window set again.

Shift-M brings the mixer forward, Shift-whatever the edit window is brings the other one back forward. The mixer always seems to remember which selection of tracks I have open independent from the edit windows, and for every edit window (incl. the mixer) I always have the track list open as a default, on the left side of it. (Window sets remember whether you want the track list or not.) For the mixer I will often quickly click over to the track list to display only those tracks in the mixer I'm presently concerned with - i.e. all the tracks of a certain section, with their reverb returns and submix.

This has been working incredibly well for me.

:D

Turn "Mix Mode Off" to on by creating a new mix.
That keeps all the tracks visible on the mixer.....well most of the time. :)

If that doesn't work just make sure you don't have any track highlighted in the tracks window.

I rely heavily on this feature so am glad they backed it out.

OTOH I also love how DP8 defaults to all tracks visible in all views. This dramatically speeds up my initial work with projects, before I start focusing on stems.
