just wanted to give some hope out there to people who may be in the same boat.
i just upgraded our studio machine from a G4 sawtooth (w/ Sonnet 1.2Ghz upgrade) running 10.4.2 and DP 4.6 *deep breath in* to a G5 dual 2Ghz.
and i did it the night i was supposed to finish mixes for delivery the next day. *psychotic*.
honestly - the entire process went w/o a hitch and was a breeze.
After installing 4.5 and updating to 4.6, then re-installing/re-validating all the plugs (Waves V5, TriTone stuff, tons of random AUs, etc), all i did was take one of the fw drives with the current project off the G4 and popped it onto the new machine. Opened up the project and i was totally shocked to see the entire thing come up fine with all the settings on all the plugs intact. Mixed and burned disc shortly after.
i am amazed it was that easy - it remains to be seen if everything else continues this smoothly though as i have not tracked with this new rig.
quick questions:
anyone with a dual 2Ghz G5 have good suggested buffer settings? anything else to check or make sure to set up / disable?
thanks !

successful upgrade to G5. It can be done.

I have played between 512 and 1024. There is a noticable diff (like 5%)
I tend to stay at 1024 for mixing and 512 for tracking (when I am dealing with VI's due to the latency)
Otherwise this thing is so powerful who really notices it
And My upgrade experience was as yours. Totally no issues (aside from my PCI crads thatI had to replace or trash

Congrats on the smooth transition. I've also been using the 2.0 G5 (2.5G ram) for several months now and have been getting good results with buffer settings as low as 64 when doing vocal odubs and playing VIs (monitoring thru a Tascam FW1884), but I usually don't run many plug ins in those situations. I'll bump up to 512 or 1024 for mixes, depending on the plug in usage.

thanks giles -
i was mixing at 512 last night - the CPU meter was way down there, but 1024 should drop it even more, so i will try that. I'm not using ANY VIs (as of now) mainly because the last machine i had since '99 or '00 and never had enough horsepower for them. we also do mainly straight ahead rock/indy/emo/acoustic w/o synths/keys, so never had much need.
