SHouldn't be like this...

Post by dazzjazz »

Hi all,

I'm really frustrated with DP at the moment.
I am running 8.04 on a brand new iMac that is top-of-the-range.
None of my projects are particularly large, but damn me if I don't get the spinning beach-ball of death and crashes. Sometimes the playbar wiper (?) wouldn't appear either.

Today I got the following weird problems and sluggish behaviour when:

1) Importing an MP3
2) Renaming a Sequence
3) Selecting a Sequence (Transport controls selected Sequence didn't match the Consolidated Window selected sequence
4) Loading a project with NOTHING but Addictive Drums as a single virtual instrument.

I'm happy to admit I'm not a power user or DP expert, but if this BS keeps up I will have to start using something else.

Not the usual experience. Call MOTU to walk you thru. Something is not right.

One thing to do right away is repair permissions.

While it hasn't been too much trouble in DP so far, I am getting that sluggish beach-ball behavior in everything else. Safari, Mail, and others, but most especially The FINDER!

I keep track of a lot of photos. I'm talking in the hundreds of thousands. I make movies from time-lapse pictures taken over years at certain scenic webcams. I never had trouble with it until Mountain Lion. It regularly dumps my Finder prefs, and my settings for individual folders get returned to default. Plus, it loses my custom icons. Very important to me, because I use those to help me with organization, to find things at a glance. The Mac Finder can no longer handle custom icons. It loses some temporarily, and they come back with a restart. But gradually it loses them permanently. I cannot find any hint of their continued existence once it has dumped some of them for good.

I think we're dealing with some really lax programming standards at Apple, whose concentration has been on iOS, instead of OS X. I don't know what it's going to take to get them back on the ball again.

These things started for me with SL. Other things include momentary loss of mouse or touchpad control, Macs starting up immediately after shutdown, inability to wake from sleep, sharing prefs changing. All things you can recover from, but along with frequent updates carrying workflow changes, I'm finding OS X is getting to be about as much a pita as Windows was 10 years ago. No longer "just works".

Maybe it's related to the big increase in security "features" that have been added over the last few years. Or maybe just good old feature bloat. You can't add 250 new functions in every update and expect it to just hum along.

I get beach balls after some recording passes of 15 stereo tracks, also slow and inconsistent waveform redraws, on the 2008ish MacPro. Maybe it's because I've gone 64 bit with only 8GB of physical RAM, I dunno. JBridge seems to be working. And on the Mid-2011 MBP with 16GB, I am having some of the wake from sleep issues mentioned above. I have to force-power-down, and when I run Disk Utility after restarting, there's always 1 too many files, and 1 too few directory entries (or vice versa.) Easy to fix with Target Disk Mode, but just sayin. . . I can relate to what Shooshie shared. However I'm still running 10.6.8! Maybe we're all running massive parallel processing for the gov't and we don't know it.
