DP8.04 Shutdown (Kernel Panic?!)

Finally made the move to DP 8.04 64 Bit (with Alphatrack!) and it's been solid, as long as I don't include my Flux plugins. (Bummer)

Had this crash once earlier the week as I was setting it up, but now again.

This time I was editing an Gtr Rig patch when BOOM....all the monitors went black and my 2408 interface went nuts. Fun noise, usually associated with loosing the connection with the computer. When I'm able to get the computer to restart it gives me the kernel panic screen, etc.

Other than that it's been pretty good! Any similar experiences?

Using the latest drivers, system, etc. Got VEP going too - latest and greatest.

Sounds like a power glitch of some sort. Could just be a one-off that'll not happen again.

Even the MOTU firewire connections (such as on the 828mkIII) don't produce that result from, for instance, a loose, twitchy plug - they just cut out quietly 'till the driver/s re-establish the connection. Given this, you'd expect the PCI AudioWire system to be even more robust, so I doubt it's an audio / interfacing connection issue.

That's all I know; I've got nothing more.

In case you don't have 'em (I've still not been able to justify the expense... yet), (a) power conditioner/s between all wall sockets and your gear is pretty much a must.

As you probably know, domestic power's pretty unfaithful to the ideal waveform's shape; this can be smoothed / conditioned by these babies. As a bonus, a reduced noise floor is oft reported by we audio weed... I mean, dweebs.

Probably preachin' to the choir, but it's there should it possibly help someone else too.

Kernel Panics might be serious or not. Frustratingly ambiguous. RAM is often a likely culprit; your panic reporter logs might give a clue. The few I've had in my Mac experiences have been traced to having the Airport active. Also sleep has been a cause I believe. YMMV.

Twice now in the last number of years the culprit for me has been an underpowered motherboard battery. Replacement fixed it. Take yours out, test it with a DC volt meter. Mine was supposed to give off 3V, it had only 2.4 left. Replaced, reset PRAM for good measure, all is smooth again.

I have two MOTU 828s. A while back I was having frequent kernel panics on one of my machines. I tracked it down to one of my 828s. Swapping it out with the other unit solved the problem. So naturally I thought it was a hardware problem. Putting the "bad" 828 on my other MacPro worked fine. Hmm? Turns out, I had a more recent driver on my other MacPro. With the most recent driver from MOTU, both units now work fine on both machines. Kernel panics are so weird, and can be either hardware or software related.

On another note, but sort of related. I became addicted to HP's RPN calculators when working in a medical research lab (in a previous life). My trusty old HP 32s calculator was on the fritz yesterday and I was searching on-line for how to do a full system reset. In a discussion somewhere, some guy posted that he was experiencing a problem similar to mine and it was just a stuck key, and suggested hitting every key on the unit several times. I thought, "Nah, can't be that simple." But I gave it a try on a whim. Sure enough, the 1/x key was the culprit - problem solved without a reset and loss of all my programs.

Moral of the story - Don't take any suggestions for granted. I'd start with Kubi's suggestion, even if the battery is not that old. You just never know. Just sayin.

I think you guys are right on the money! Battery sounds totally reasonable. Happened again today! Also, it sometimes takes 2-3 presses of the power button to get it to fire up each morning. Hope my power supply isn't faulty....GULP!
