DP 4.1 upgrade to 4.6

Post by brucie »

Hi there

Hopefully this post won't be too long winded, I just have a couple of questions. Basically I have been running DP3.11 on an iMac G4 800 with 768Mb of ram. (audio on an FW drive) I moved up to OSX 10.2 about 2 years ago and then moved to 4.1. Needless to say I wasn't happy with the perfomance and a)went back to using 3.11 and b)started using Sonar on the PC (Long story!!).

Needless to say I miss DP so much and want to be using the latest version, but currently I can't afford to upgrade my machine (I know this is the solution....but there is no cash in the business pot!).

So I was wondering

a)Is the change from 10.2.6 to 10.4.(?) and moving to 4.6 going to have that much of an impact? ie is it worth it.

b)I have a very powerful PC and was wondering, if I could use something like MIDI over lan to control my Softsynths on the PC and run DP comfortably on the iMac?

Thanks in advance

Neil

You would want at least 1gb of ram on the Imac, don't expect much of
a track count with an 800mhz G4 chip in an Imac with 768 mb of
ram.
What sample rates do you want to record at would be one question I could think of.
You'd likely get at least 16 tracks of 24 bit/44khz audio as my friends
old G4/667 powerbook could get that.
If You're using the internal harddrive of your Imac, it's (possibly) a
5400 rpm drive which would slow things down a bit.
Each iteration of OSX has (arguably) improved.
I would NEVER go back to OS 10.2+
As for B..Look at wormhole as a possible solution.

Also
I wouldn't waste alot of time with Virtual instruments on a G4/800.
A 2018 Mac mini with 16 gb of ram
HUGE bunch o' AU instruments/fx...
A Metric Halo ULN8-3D…mmmmmmm
Remember to eat all your fruits and vegetables!
My OS is The amazingly gratuitous 10.14
