I was using v3.something when I realized there was no way not to start from a template. So, I made a few basic templates and have been starting from them ever since. Pretty easy to customize them for whatever I am doing at the moment. As for not using templates, you ALWAYS use a template when opening a new file.

Re: Automatic Conversions frustration
I'll say that I tend to agree with the majority on this one: it works the way it does as a design decision, and overall it's a reasonable decision.
As for why anyone would want it the way it is, *I DO!* I work projects of so many diverse types that there are many times I *do* want some or all of the automatic conversions; such as with piles of short bites from several sources, when none of them agree with each other. Other times the auto conversions really need to *not* happen; usu. in regard to many huge track files that take too long to convert until I'm ready for them to, or sometimes I'm doing some slight-of-hand trickery to convert things a certain way, and I don't want the automatics to un-do what I'm in the middle of.
I've always done exactly what is indicated above: set a template for each of the various types of projects I work. Then I've always got something "close" to what I need in all respects. I start a new project from the best template I have, maybe make a couple tweaks, and I'm on my way.
---
Say, just a slight question loosely related on-the-side here. Sometimes (not often) I find clips in the SE which do not show a waveform overview - just a thick line horizontally through the track. Sometimes they will automatically recompute the overview at the next project open, but some of them never do. Is there a way to manually cause DP8.04 to perform an overview rebuild of a selected file/bite? If so, I can't seem to find it, at least not in file conversions or the automatic conversion setup. (MacOSX 10.6.8, MBP, dual-core, 4GB)
My current workaround is to create a new audio file from the selected soundbite, and then drag it to the SE timeline in place of the non-rendered one. The overview for the new file/bite gets built just fine. The original file/bite still never figures it out though.

You can try trashing the analysis files found in the project folder so they will be regenerated. That may work.kats_corner wrote:

Dan, Thanks!Dan Worley wrote: You can try trashing the analysis files found in the project folder so they will be regenerated. That may work.
Feeling a "duh" moment here. For whatever reason, it never crossed my mind to try that - but that's a great idea!

Had a walkin that lasted all afternoon. I'll have to try to run that test sometime over the weekend.

There's a hiatus and a half... I just realized that I never got back in here to post the results of that test suggested by Dan. The quick answer is, it worked like a champ! The slightly more extended corollary is that if you know exactly which waveform needs to be regenerated, you don't need to trash all of the analysis files, just the one(s) associated with the clip(s) in question.
