Opening old projects

Why would launching an old 5 project not open? All that work and no launch. Audio files are all there and good. Seems to not access files. Could not load chunk of same either.

I have not had any problems opening old projects with DP7, but other folks have. Do a search of mikehalloran's posts. I seem to recall him mentioning some problems, and I think he had a work-around.

So the chunk won't load from a new session even if you don't select anything but the desired chunk??? (no audio files, no nothing) :?

Correct. I tried it both ways. I loaded the files, SDII from that period, back into a fresh session and tried to recreate the mix. Could not recreate the mix perfectly but it did work with a big effort.

Not sure but I think it was only on his one tune. Will try others later.

Did it ever get transferred up to a server without being ZIP'd first? Did you ever copy the project to a drive or USB stick that was formatted for Windows? You might have lost your resource forks to your files. I think SD2 files need to have resource forks also.

Thanks for your reply James.

No, I have had these projects on a 1 terabyte backup drive for years untouched in my mac pro desk '09 machine and '07 machine before that. The resource fork issue I believe effects audio files. The audio files all are fine and they were SDII btw. When imported into 7.24 they converted perfectly. If it also messes with DP project files, I would like to know more about that. This tune was important to me because Phil C. from Def Leppard did the leads.

Only one song of the album I'm working on from this period had this issue. Thanks for comments...

Really good idea. DP 7.01 opened them no problem - it was 7.12 and 7.24 that had issues and I posted an extensive workaround.

I still had a couple of problem files when all was said and done. Interestingly, DP 8 opened those like nothing was ever wrong once I cleared up the Admin privileges:

Run Get Info on your project folder. If your Admin account is not listed, add it. Change privileges to Read and Write for all users. Check apply to enclosed files.

Thanks Mike yes, they were written in 7.01 I think. Also, these projects were apparently imported chunks as it seems this song was problematic previously.

I'll try the privileges change.

If you open DP while holding down the shift key, the audio driver won't run but the file might open. If so, then turn on "Motu Audio System" via SETUP. If the project works now, save it. This has worked for me on a number of problematic older files in DP 7.24 that I thought were gone for good. Relatively painless and worth trying?

OK, I have tried the privileges and it did nothing. I then tried holding the shift key, nothing there either but I saw this slow motion visual of the icon opening, that's it. DP just sat there and nothing was loaded, not even the session name.

The files have data because they are all about 1.8mb. Just won't open. Think James's comment about the resource fork might be the truth here. I never knew a session file could experience this but I'm beginning to believe it.

This is not dire as I did find a very old 5 session that opened but overdubs and changes were not there. The transfer of phil's parts, audio etc and new session works but it was one of those kitchen sync mixes I desperately wanted back. I'm afraid that's gone forever.

I really wish MOTU had made a mix export feature from DP years ago including plugs and sends. I could have just reassigned the tracks and been back up. Apparently the chunk attempts to recover that I tried back then were the ones that failed today.

Thanks again for the ideas. Appreciate.

It's not over till its over. Have you tried reinstalling 7.01? When I ran into this issue, that was my first step (I was shipped the 7.24 upgrade). I borrowed a 7.01 CD from a friend, used my own serial number and it installed without disturbing 7.24. Anyway. 7.01 opened my files.

And, though I got most working in 7.24, those few remaining all opened in 8 as if there was never a problem.

Thanks Mike but I'm just doing the remix and living with it at this point. No reason to take a chance upsetting 7.24 at this point. Next purchase and experiment buy Bidule AU simulator and run 8 demo on a separate drive. This will be interesting.

Was notified my Waves plugs need a $75 upgrade to run in OSX 8.04 or DP 8. So, that makes $100 for Kontakt 6, $100 for P-Bidule, $195 for DP 8 and we'll see what else. Already updated to AT7 for $75 bucks. $545 total. Like buying DP all over again. Wow! Not like the days when you buy it and your good to go for many years.

How long will this major update last this time I wonder.

Yea, there is no chance of that, actually. DP 8 will upset 7.24 but 7.01 will not.

Hey Gary, long time no chat, fella. Hope all's well, mate.

I lost my most precious IRs (the "Eastlake?" room) sourced from the Altiverb site back in the days when one could access the free library; they've since required you to be a registered Altiverb user (since v3 or 4 I think). I've dreamed of using them for my drum kits (TD20 brain and previously DM-Pro) as I don't think I've heard a better woody room. I've not bothered to ask if anyone here has 'em, 'cause Audio Ease changed the format from SDII to a proprietary one long ago.

I tried various freeware apps and loading all the older copies I had backed up to CD, but for some strange reason the forks were still missing / damaged. I'm no geek, but I did spend many months trying to retrieve them. All up several hundred megs of data was lost, but the only IRs I really cared about were of that room. I've still got the files in the vain hope I can salvage them one day somehow.

The same thing happened to a MIDI file from the ATARI that had at least 15 new songs laid down as piano tracks. I thought I'd hit on the perfect system for recording ideas (placing each on a single track within one project, making auditioning super-quick). After importing it to the Mac when I switched 14 or so years ago, I found that for some reason both it and its backup copy were unreadable. The dozens of individual songs as MIDI files all loaded perfectly; it was only the one with the previous few years' writing that wouldn't.

I feel your pain. These things just plain suck.
