File name import bug!

Post by Prime Mover »

Just ran into a bug that would have ruined my album had I not caught one obvious discrepancy in the pre-master. I was doing some mastering, and needed to go back and change a few mixes. I just wrote over the old mix files when I was done, and imported them into the mastering project. What I didn't realize is that DP went "oh, I already have that same file" and tried to save time by using the older version of that file (since it didn't seem to differentiate between two versions of the file with the same name). I had a "CD Finalizing party" tonight and invited the band over. We were noticing subtle problems, and at the very end, I tried searching around and realized that EVERY soundbite I used was over a week old! I've been having to go back and do the process all over again, and it's really horrible since I'm on deadline.

Anyway, just wanted to give a heads up, if you drag a file into DP8.04 that's an updated version of an already imported file, and it has the same name, you'll just be given the older version. MOTU should probably fix this, and have the program look at the file size, modified date, or checksum to determine more accurately if the file is actually a duplicate.

I have a similar problem with Waveburner. The only solution is to not only trash the old file, but also empty the trash. Otherwise WB would link back to the old file- even if it was in the trash!

Congrats on finishing the album. Our band just finished ours too.

Sounds like an OS rather than an app specific bug. You might reconsider the topic title.

I don't want to argue about this, but I call it what it looks like. I'm not sure how this is an OS bug when it's DPs handling of files. I'd rather blame the OS, but I just don't see it.

My comment was based on the above. It's not about you.
