DP Clip Senstivity??

Post by strikingtwice »

Hi all. I was wondering if anyone else had any issues with the clip
meter in DP being ultra sensitive or just somestimes inaccurate. It
doesn't happen so much but often i'll get a visual clip with no audible
clip.

A live recording on my 896 showed the feed from the aes ebu clipping
like mad. recording, no clips.
I noticed it tenfold with the RME fireface 800 a friend lent it to me
to check out. it doesn't seem that the TotalMix console and DP's clip
meter linked up very well. I'm not sure if there's a way to calibrate
it in DP or if ti's the hardware pieces. Anyone have any words?

I just started using Elemental Audio's XL inspector and the level meters seem to be able to detect very brief clipping which the master level meter in the DP desk does not show.

But I haven't really done any specific tests to callobrate DP's metering.

Same here Inspector is a much better gauge IMO.

DP's meters tend to show clip before you have actually clipped.

Meters in DP (and all DAWs really) are completely arbitrary. There's no measurement of headroom and the "0" starting point means nothing.

I use the UAD Precision Limiter or Waves' PAZ meters to get a sense of where things are on a dbFS level.

what is good about inspector is the fact that you can meter rms and Peak, so you can get a good sense of where you are. Also with the ability to adjust the metering to the Standard convention of -18dbfs = 0db (analog meters) the meters are not arbitrary, but rather quite functional.

Inspector provides much finer resolution. Try it out over at elemental. You might find it quite usefull. I can finally say I have a nice PPM to use.

Also - the inspector 'introductory price' is now back on. (I wish they're do a deal on all their other plugs - they're all top quality)

The DP clip indicators should be much closer then they are.

Another sloppy DP design characteristic which (I think, IMO, I feel, me thinks....) downgrades the DAW to semipro status.
Just want to be clear this is and has been my opinion since vers: 3.12

Along with... automation mute/solo issues, short throw, low resolution faders and more.

Someone in Boston doesn't feel it's important I guess.

With a MCU the faders have very hi res. .01db to .03db as you get closer to the bottom of travel. that is pretty darn fine for me.

Also with my Control surface the mutes seem pretty precise. Mousing it around just totally sucks

DP faders may be quite short in the GUI but isn't the *resolution* actually higher than other DAWs like Logic for instance?

Dragging faders by mouse is never going to be ideal - whatever the throw is on screen. Although, come to think of it if they geared the faders movement with a 2:1 ratio of mouse movement to fader that'd be nice.

hmmmm. Optional mouse/fader gear ratio could be selected in Mixer mini menu!

Yes. I have one (MCU). I'm speaking of DP's graphic faders which are difficult at best for mouse mixes. We need 85mm (Graphic) faders for mouse or at least a precision mode.

I'm not complaining about mute timing. I'm speaking about mute releases in solo mode which was changed after DP 3.12 and sucks as it is now.
