Can't hear my Kronos in MIDI Tracks via DP8

Post by SeikoT123 »

Hi to all,

I am trying to set up my Korg KronosX to record via a MIDI track in Digital Performer 8, but can't seem to make it work. More details about my setup are below, but basically, I have my Kronos connected to my MacBook Pro (Retina) directly via USB MIDI (thanks to previous advice from many on this board).

The Kronos is being recognised as a selectable device in DP's Track 1 setup (alongside DP's native instruments, such as the Polysynth, which is recognized and playable with audio output via the Kronos as a controller, so the Kronos's MIDI out connection seems good). I can also see and select the Kronos instruments from a huge sound bank of programs menu available right in the DP track. However, when I select a program (e.g., German Grand) and play a note, the Track meter jumps in response (seeming to recognize the MIDI IN signal), but I cannot hear any sound, suggesting either that my Kronos isn't responding to MIDI OUT, or my audio outs aren't set up right.

I am somewhat new to the music scene after a very long break, and am hoping to get back into music-making with a sequencer like DP and a great keyboard like the Kronos, but I am getting stumped by the very basics!

If you do not have time for a detailed answer, any links to information that I could study to resolve the problem would be great. I have tried to follow the instructions in both DP's and Kronos's manuals, but to no avail.

My current studio setup is as follows:

MacBook Pro retina 2.8GHz, 768GB Flash Storage, 16GB memory, 27" thunderbolt screen
MOTU hybrid mk3 (set up as shown below)
DP8
Adam a7x monitors
Korg Kronos X

The Main Outs of my mk3 go directly to my Adam s7x monitors. My Korg Kronos X is going into the mk3's analog Ins numbers 3-4. My mk3 is connected to my MacBook Pro via Firewire w/thunderbolt adapter. I am using the mk3's DC power source. As mentioned above, USB connection from the Kronos directly into the laptop.

My Ultralite mk3 settings are as follows:

Sample Rate: 44100
Clock Source: Internal
Default Stereo Input: Analog 1-2
Default Stereo Output: Main Out 1-2
Phones Assign: Phones 1-2
Main Out Assign: Analog 3-4 when just playing my Kronos without turning on the MacBook Pro, and I switch to Main Outs 1-2 when using DP
Return Assign 1-2

BTW - I am on the verge of getting Universal Audio's Apollo Audio Interface (thunderbolt connection), so if you think the problem lies with the mk3, then let me know that and I will retry after I get the Apollo.

Thank you all in advance!

My old Korg X3 has a setting that specifies internal or external (INT,EXT). will not sound till set to EXT. Can you hear the sound via headphone jack on Korg. Just a thought. Also making sure you have an audio track set up to accept incoming audio

First , Your Mk 3 what ? … an Ultralite mk 3 ? … an 828 mk3 ? … an 896 mk3
a Traveler mk3 ? The 1st 3 are all 'Hybrids', the Traveler is not. Which one ?

Second… from your subject line-"Can't hear my Kronos in MIDI tracks via DP8"
MIDI is NOT audio | Audio is NOT MIDI

Try this …
1. Go to global mode in your Kronos , navigate to local control and turn/toggle 'local control' to off.
2. Create MIDI track in DP 8 , toggle record button ON, and output
On. Place DP in Multi-Record mode. Choose the Kronos as the input AND the output of this MIDI track.
3. if you have headphones, plug them in to the headphone output of the Kronos. Choose your Grand Piano in PROGRAM mode.

When playing your Kronos, You should now be hearing sound in your headphones. Please report back once you accomplish this.

1. Go to the Macs AUDIO/MIDI set up app and route your MIDI gear set up.
2. DP will now see your correct MIDI I/O set up and you can route everything as you wish.

Thank you, everyone.

I can now select my Kronos as a device in DP's Track window and can hear it when I play the Kronos keyboard.

My next issue is being able to select Kronos patches via DP's Track selection. I can actually see and select the patch names from among the hundreds of Kronos patches, but when I select them the only sound that comes out is whatever is selected in the first bank of Kronos's SET LIST. I'll try to solve that issue over in the Korg forum.

Thanks again to all for your help!

I believe you need to insert a 'Bank' command change in the track itself , followed by the program change.
If you want to choose a 'combi' , a sys-ex command must come first , then bank command change , then the combi change itself.

Download this utility app… "MIDI Monitor" here -
http://www.snoize.com/MIDIMonitor/

Open MIDI monitor … with Kronos turned on , hit the Combi button
a message will appear on the screen that looks like this… F1 _ _ _ _ _ F7 write it down - repeat for Program mode

Open DP … add 2 MIDI tracks , one for Program mode, one for Combi
open the event list for each track and insert the Sys-ex command appropriate for each track. (When you need more tracks whether program or combi , highlight the one you want to add and simply use the duplicate track command)
Highlight the sys-ex message and save to a DP clipping and label Kronos Sys-ex Combi and Kronos Sys-ex Program respectively. Save the file as a template. All necessary commands for Kronos & DP interaction
are now ready/waiting with each new file you open from this template.

Bank commands should be in your manual along with the sys-ex info.
hope this helps !! Schweats
