Branching Undo History; Is it working?
I used to see branches in my Undo History. Some time back, and I don't remember when, I noticed that when I would go back in Undo History and make a change, all the following part of the history would simply be lost. I couldn't find its branch.
I checked preferences, did some cursory experimenting, but always left it "for later," because I didn't have the time to focus on that right then. After reading a mention in another thread about Undo History, I went back and did some extensive experimentation. The result? In DP8.01, I'm not getting ANY branching, no matter what I do. I though maybe it was something I was doing wrong. I never actually learned branching Undo; it was just there. It seemed to work long ago. But now there isn't anything I can do to produce a branch in Undo History.
It seems that some other people are experiencing this, and yet some are saying that it works for them. It should be as simple as going back in time a few lines, then making a change — say, moving a note or adding a plugin. Then you should have a branch in the lines of history that you skipped back over and left hanging. That should become a branch to which you can return, if you like. But it's not, for me. All that just gets erased the moment I commit to any action when going back in history and making a change.
This would be a good time to find out if others are experiencing this, and if anyone is actually getting it to work. If yours works, maybe you can help us troubleshoot what's going wrong, for those of us who can't seem to make it work.
Is there some command or menu item that needs invoking? Some hidden preference setting? I've been through the manual (starts on page 519 of the DP8 manual) and I can't find a thing that might be considered "the trick" to making it work. It's supposed to just work.
I basically have my Undo History prefs set to start pruning only after 1000 entries. I can go back in my archives and dig out old versions of the same file, if I want, but when I do that, I still see no Undo branching.
It's just not happening here. What the heck is going on?

Re: Branching Undo History; Is it working?
PS: in the Undo Folder in Digital Performer Preferences, there is nothing.
In the Project folder, the Undo Folder is jam packed with data.
It has occurred to me, If multiple versions of the same file are all sharing the same Undo Folder (within the project folder, where all versions of that file are kept) could that compromise the Undo History's ability to parse the data and make a coherent timeline from it?

Re: Branching Undo History; Is it working?
OK, I'm not understanding the issue. In the Undo History window, under "View," I select "All Branches At Once." The branches are separated in the list by double-lines. If I go back to an older branch and perform new actions, the appear, as they should, in that old branch. Newer branches still exist, i.e., I can still go back (or, more accurately, forward) to the newest branch I started. Is this different from the old implementation of "side branches?"Shooshie wrote:I used to see branches in my Undo History. Re: Branching Undo History; Is it working?
The issue is that no branches are showing in my Undo History, and if I go back in time and make changes, that does not become a branch. Instead, it erases all the "future" actions that I just leapfrogged over backwards. My changes become the end of the Undo History, and there is no way to get back the things that were originally in that path.plurye wrote:OK, I'm not understanding the issue. What version of DP/OSX are you using?

I'm on DP 8.0.1 and Mac OS 10.7.5. Strange—works fine for me. You have "All branches at once" selected in the pop-up menu? (Forgive the question.)

Re: Branching Undo History; Is it working?
Yeah, I've tried every possible setting with the controls given, including the prefs (which really don't apply to this particular thing). I've got pruning set to happen after 1000 entries, and no pruning of branches. Branches just aren't happening.plurye wrote:I'm on DP 8.0.1 and Mac OS 10.7.5. Strange—works fine for me. I'd sure like to figure out what's wrong, and how it happened to my system. I've got DP 8.01, as do you, but my OS is 10.8.3.

Wow, that's odd. Do post if you ever figure it out.
