Do I need ISRC codes?
So I've tried to read up on these but still haven't answered my question if this is something worth doing for what amounts to a local release. Our band is putting out a CD, mostly local sales and also selling on Amazon, iTunes, Bandcamp, etc. How necessary are ISRC codes to a project like that? I'm willing to do it if there's a worthwhile argument in favor of it.

I'm pretty sure you need them for iTunes

I use a distributor here in the UK for all the online stores (including iTunes and Amazon), my album is download only, and it was a requirement, they helped set it up - it was a simple form to fill in.
Personally I think it is a good idea, unless you are simply manufacturing CDs for private consumption or promotion.

I just realized that the similar distro package I've used with Discmakers actually includes ISRC codes. DUH. They take care of a bunch of distribution details for $59 - well worth it IMO.
I'll check out Tunecore.

This is totally OT but I just Googled Tunecore to see what it was all about. The next site I went to was weather.com and what do I see? A Tunecore ad! This has also been happening with Discmakers. I Googled about their mastering services (for reviews) and now about half the sites I visit have an ad for Discmakers mastering service- for about 3 weeks now. This targeted Google advertising is really getting creepy!

Yes always use ISRC and manage them yourself unless you have a contract indicating other wise.
