CD Burning Issue

Post by PJHarmonic »

I'm trying to understand how DP8 does CD Burning. I've written a few songs now--4 or 5--and when I finish various song versions, I bounce the tracks to disc as a stereo track then attempt to burn a CD of the bounce track to my MacBook Pro Superdisk. CD Burning has worked off and on, but not consistently. I got so mad at the thing after numerous attempts this last time around that I inadvertently erased my song, thinking it to be my failed bounce track! (Just wasn't paying attention, and cussing all the time.) After making the bounce track and placing it in a song that I call Master Tracks, I highlight the track, go to CD Burning, make sure the settings show 16-bit/44.1kHz, then go for the burn. What I am getting consistently now is the following error message after the burn goes almost all the way til the end: "The operating system made an incorrect data request. The resulting disc is probably corrupt. Try reducing the number of tracks or shortening the audio." This is from stereo tracks lasting approximately 5 minutes. Should I use an outside CD burning program, or am I doing something wrong?

ML isn't your issue.

I would suspect your media. Try switching brands.

I did a switch. Bought a 100 stack of new Sony CDs. Same result, more cussing.

CD burning in DP has been completely unreliable since it was first implemented. It's a great idea but put simply: it just doesn't work.

Get a dedicated app like Toast or even burn via iTunes and just forget DP as a reliable burner. It's not the media. It's not the OS. It's not you. It's DP. That is the answer.

Are you saying I can drag the stereo track into iTunes and it will register as a song? (I would try it now if I weren't at work.)

You can import your tracks or any standard audio file into iTunes. Create a playlist with the tracks you want and burn an audio cd. You don't have as much control as in a dedicated app but it works.

Shortcut: create the new playlist and drag the tracks directly into the playlist window.

Like many, I use Toast.

Toast has an interesting, if annoying, issue. If you have fades, you can preview, tweak and get them to play back perfectly. When you listen in regular playback, the transition between tracks not be smooth at all. The CD you burn will play back perfectly.

The only time I do this is when the artist does a medley and I want the various parts to have different track numbers. A good example would be movements 3-5 in Beethoven Symphony 6. DP creates the three parts very easily and playback is perfect. Dropping the three parts into Toast and setting to 0 won't do it but you can easily get it right in the Fade window. The resulting CD will be perfect but, when listening to the Toast file on your Mac, you'll hear the transition. :banghead:

Here is some decent free software that creates a Red book Standard, however it has a very annoying quirk in that it forces you to auto-Tweet everytime you use the free version. I created a dummy account just so I could use it.

I've used an old version of Jam (that used to be separate from Toast). It works well. Don't know if that's an option in this OS.

I think DSP Quattro is also a good option.

I don't think I've ever used DP's CD burning functions. So I've avoided some of the headaches you've run into.

If you use iTunes to burn an audio CD it will work for regular uses, but not if you were wanting to make a CD master (like for duplication). -- At least, I don't think it would work.

I've used DSP-Q for CDs and never had any problems reported by those receiving them. I've never tried DP for it because of the S&A the feature gets on this forum.

Still have my copy of Jam 6.whatever, the last version. I know it doesn't work anymore but don't recall if OS 10.4 or 10.5 was the last.

Quick tip - if you use iTunes (great for day-to-day use, i.e. to make a quick CD to check in the car or to give to a client) do the Playlist thingy that Michael mentions.

And before you drag anything in there, under iTunes' Advanced Preferences, uncheck the "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library".

This way iTunes merely references the file for burning purposes, but doesn't actually create a whole copy, so your AIFFs of work-in-progress or whatever don't fill up your iTunes storage.
