as the title states, OSX volume controls stopped working with my new Lion upgrade. Anyone know how i can get these controls back as its a nightmare.
Cheers

It's hard to answer your question without knowing what hardware you're using.
FWIW, I have an UltraLite and am on OS 10.6.8. Core Audio volume control can be enabled through the MOTU Audio Setup application. There is a box you can check called Enable Core Audio Volume Controls.
I don't know if it's the same with Lion, but you could at least check and see.

Option-click your speaker icon menu and see if you can change your settings from there.

I saw this with the Audio Express but not with the Track 16. However, you do need to be sure the connection isn't lost after a booting or rebooting as the Track 16 driver and Apple's CoreAudio are still shaking out bugs. The temp fix for the T16 is to be sure you turn it off before power down and on after power up.
There's also an option in the MOTU audio app (I forgot what it's called and won't be at my rig for a while - sorry) to enable the Mac vol controls except mute.
If you check Apple's Audio MIDI app and see duplicated devices you should delete them and be sure to do the power up/down dance above until the drivers start shaking hands and playing nicely.
Sorry for typos as I'm on an iPhone.
