2408 mk3 sample rate issues

Post by Skies »

I would like to run Pro Tools 10 on my new 2408 but it looks like I can't because the playback buffer reverts to 44k when I open an 48k Pro Tools project. It remains at 48k until I open a project, than it reverts to 44k while the project is 48k. The result is slower playback.

Since I can't change the sample rate while the card is in use it looks like I'm f***ed...

Windows 7 64bit.

(EDIT: changed title since the problem is not only Pro Tools related)

If you haven't already, try asking over on the DUC. There are plenty of folks using various MOTU devices with PT. I'm using a 828mk3 on both the Mac and PC and don't have this issue. Doesn't mean there aren't any issues though. But if I had to take a stab at it, I'd say you have clocking issue either now or when the session was created. Does it do it with new sessions?

Thanks, I could try on the DUC but I thought this would be a better place.

I tried it with a new session and it remained 48k. But as soon as I played back another file in for example Windows Media Player, it swapped back to 44k and stayed there.

But I found out the problem is not just in Pro Tools! I opened FL Studio. It swaps back to 48k (unlike Pro Tools). But again, when I open a file in Windows Media Player, or in Spotify etc. the sample rate goes back to 44k and stays like that.

I can't work this way. If there is no solution I'll have to return the item and get something else.

I find it really weird, it can change sample rate while in use, but I can't (read: am not allowed to by the software). And even if I could I couldn't work this way. Audio must always play back at the right speed, period.

This is not necessarily true. If you have your audio interface locked to an external clock and your session sample rate is different, you'll have problems like you're describing. This may have been a problem with your previous setup.

What is your setting for the device in the Sound Control Panel. In the Advanced tab you select the default bit depth and sample rate for the device with Windows audio. It's normal for the sample rate to switch if the app/DAW or Windows is configured for different rates.

Thank you NazRat.

I did check the sound control panel settings and put everything to 48k. This solved the problem.

However, it might not come as a surprise that the effect is now reversed... When opening a 44k session it plays too fast. Not to mention that if I ever have to work in a 96k session, there would be no workaround since 44k and 48k are the only options in the (Windows) sound control panel.

Big fail for the Motu 2408 mk3. This one is going back to the shop.

(Edit:) This is the first time in my life a sound card behaves like that. It's OK if it switches sample rates but it should switch BACK as well and it doesn't.
