Memory monitoring

I'm trying to keep track of how much RAM I'm using and I am a bit confused using the Activity monitor on the MAC. "Used" memory was close to my 16GB RAM yet I didn't have that much loaded. I kept loading patches without complaints. Would the number I need to pay attention to be the "Wired" one?

This is what I use - Works great. I can view the memory usage at a glance.

+1 on MenuMeters.
Helps me much in deciding when a reboot, or a memory purge thru OnyX, is needed.
