DP 7.21 on 2009 MacBook Pro: Kontakt 5 knob drama

Post by BatBoySings »

I just installed Komplete 8 on 2009 MacBook Pro (2.8 Ghz/4Gb RAM/ OSX 10.6.8) for travel. Kontakt 5 works fine as a standalone. All the parameter knobs work fine.

But if I launch Kontakt as a plug-in within DP, then load most any Factory or Vintage instrument, then click on any of the round knobs in the "Instrument Controls" panel (things like 'Sound', 'Chord' , "Key", or reverb "Amount"), then all the nearby knobs freeze at 12 o'clock. And are stuck that way. The instrument itself still makes noise, it's just stuck making a 1-3-6 chord I didn't ask for. So I have to delete the instrument and reload. This happens every time. Similar freezes also happen with organ stops.

It's weird. It only seems to be a problem on certain knobs, not others; the "Options" panel seems to be fine. Up/down switches seem ok.

And there's no problem with the tiny pull-down menus that choose reverb types like "Concert Hall" or "Room". But if I click the round "Amount" knob next to it, then all the nearby round knobs are frozen at 12.

My next step will be updating to DP 7.24, but I doubt that will take care of it. I'm reluctant to install DP 8 at all, let alone on this computer. All suggestions welcome. Thanks.

I'd absolutely update to 7.24.
If you can add more ram,I'd do that as well.
Between DP and K5,4gig of ram is minimal.
Maybe try adjusting settings in Kontakt,is KMS turned on? Maybe turn off etc.....
If you're using a fw io as well as the fw drives you might have a fw bottleneck,I don't know your Mac but maybe there's another way you can hook up the drives, add a card etc....

Thanks for the advice! Yeah, upgrading to 7.24 got rid of the sticky knobs. But the overall strain of Kontakt 5 on an old computer was too much so I had to buy a new MacBook Pro fully tricked out with 16 GB RAM, etc. Now I'm wondering about two things: a) does anyone recommend using DP8 with Mountain Lion 10.8.2 on a new MacBook Pro, or should I stick with 7.24? And b) what is the deal with Kontakt Memory Server? When is it useful? All I hear is that people should always make sure it's off so as not to overload CPU. Is KMS and DP just not a good match?

If your in DP8 64bit mode in 10.82 you don't need the KMS on,it was useful in 32bit apps like 7.24 to get past the 4gig limitation of any 32bit DAW.
DP8.01 works well with OSX 10.82.
KMS is not really useful in a 64bit DAW,it more about NI's implementation for handing ram in OSX 32bit IMO .
With DP8.01 in a 64bit system you will not have the same limitations.
I prefer DP8 64bit in the 64bit kernel and have better use of my Mac than I did with 7.24 but part of this will depend on how many 32 it plugs you have, most users are having a great experience using jBridge to use 32bit plugs in a 64bit DP and for me it's been great.
If you search the subject you will find tons of info and numerous threads on this.
It goes without saying ymmv but for me as well as most users here DP8.01 is a great step forward,if you're going to stay in 7, DP7.24 is one of the best DP versions ever but I've been using DP8 since it was released and I've no desire to go back to 7 or anything 32bit,whether it be the DAW or the kernel.
