Install Mt. Lion update hell!

Post by twistedtom »

I was in Snow Leopard when I down loaded and started an install of Mt. Lion on a different drive, the one I have Mt. Lion on. The install went to the normal install page but at the end of the install it froze up. I had to use the button to shut the computer down and restart it. After it restarted it went into the set up that you get for the first time you install the OS. Now all the programs I had on that drive are gone, they do not show up under "applications". The odd thing is all the short cuts in the dock are still there. Man this is the craps! I am P.O.ed! :smash:

Have you tried to click and hold on one of the icons and select "show in finder"? The apps might be in a different partition. If the icons are showing it usually means the apps are still there but the directory has changed with the OS update. You DID have a backup before you did this... didn't you? I did the update and selected Time machine as the preferred migration method. If you have TM, it is a very reliable way to do the upgrade.

No I did not have Time Machine on for ML.
I do see a drive that says 10.8.2 restore, I will give that a try.

Do you mean Snow Leopard? Your post seems to indicate you moved from ML to ML.

When I started the update install I was on drive #1, I have Snow Leopard on that drive. I installed the update for Mountain Lion on drive #2 the one with Mountain Lion on it.

I found the programs they in a folder called Recovered Items, then in a folder called Applications. Some of them will work, the Adobe ones ask to be reinstalled.

Yeah, the Adobe license doesn't usually convert but it's easy. Word as well if you're on the latest version. DP will probably also want to be reauthorized as may a few plugs. But in all, ML is just freakin' awesome.

I trust you will have the good taste to not let Shooshie or the others know that I said that about ML...

I wind up restoring from Time Machine on occasion (twice over the weekend). I do some testing that has been known to corrupt my Mac - restoring from TM a couple of hours earlier is often easier than putting humpty together again.

I never have to reauthorize Office 2011 or 2008 or Finale. I do have to re-authorize DP 7.24 and 8. A couple of internet licenses, FinalDraft and MasterWriter need to be de-authorized first or it's a call to Tech Support when I am done.
