Nanosampler . . . need something more powerful?

I'm a middle school band director and for a while now I've wanted to use my DP rig to launch samples of instruments in class as a teaching aid. I've dabbled with it, but have not come up with something effective enough to try in front of fifty 12-year-olds.

I have a Macbook Pro, DP6, an Akai LPK25 MIDI keyboard and an Akai APC20. I bought those in the hopes of having a device to trigger samples, but I can't find the right hardware/software combination to do what I really want to do.

I really want to have banks of different samples at my fingers to demonstrate tonal concepts. For example, I want to be able to trigger a great trumpet sound and then be able to immediately trigger a great tuba sound. My initial thought was that I would load some samples in Nanosampler and be ready to go. But Nanosampler seems to only play one sample at a time (i.e. only the trumpet patch will play.) This is just the beginning. I also want to have some drum sets handy to rock some beats out with my fingers for some fun and also trigger some song files of funny tunes to use in class.

So if you're still reading:
1) Will nanosampler do what I want to do or do I need a more robust sampler?
2) What software/product will allow me to build custom banks of samples and assign the to various places on the controllers?
3) Is anyone using the APC20 with DP, or do I need to get Ableton Live?

I'm really looking for the easiest, cheapest solution to accomplish the above ideas. Thanks for your help- Mike

Just get Kontakt5 and you're good to go. That's the best software sampler
there is. Comes with a huge library of great orchestral and other sounds.
You can build custom maps of instruments too - anything you want to do.

Definitely also check out MOTU's newly released MachFive 3. It containes TONS of sounds and it'll give you all the typical features of a sampler plus many many more.

Thanks for the replies. I looked into Kontakt (after seeing the Cinebrass orchestral samples- AMAZING!) but it looks like only Kontakt 5 is out there right now which means I would have to upgrade my OS (10.5. and then nearly ALL my apps including DP- Yikes! Maybe I can run Mach 5, haven't looked into it yet.

My 2 cents:
Reason has 2 virtual samplers, N19 and NNXT.
N19 is simple layer, NNXT is multilayer.
They work fine with DP thru Rewire.
Both have some learning curves, but are deep enough to fit your demand and more.

You can load up many instances of Nanosampler, each with its own instrument. Going from one to another is as simple as hitting the arrow (up and down) keys, which move the Record Enable to the previous or next track.

Lots of other good options, too, as you've already seen. But I just wanted to remind you that even though Nanosampler can only load one instrument, you can load many Nanosamplers.

I tried to drag and drop a stereo sample in to NanoSampler but no love so I ended up using Kontakt. Checked the DP8 manual and my eyes went blurry! Does NanoSampler allow drag and drop? (MOTU, please give us a searchable .pdf manual

??? DP 8 comes with a set of searchable PDF manuals. They're inside the application package. You can drag out copies, or just save them to your documents folder when they're loaded.

I'm sure you can find an older version of Kontakt on ebay. I wouldn't know if they're new or used, legal or not, but I think I've seen them for sale.

I'm another fan of Reason as far as samplers go... it's a great rack of virtual stuff to use with DP!

Yes Reason for me too - loads of flexibility and loads of sounds and sound mangling - and through Rewire it works perfectly. Losts of really useful stuff with the Reason rack.
