Got the 4.5 manual right here. Isn't Freeze Selected Tracks (pp.181, 485) what you're looking for?

ok i've got the freeeze tracks working. the tech note helped.

the problem was i had already created a kontakt multi instrument
then created a simple MIDI track in dp and assigned it to ch3 of the instrument i wanted in kontakt.

i did not create an "instrument track" first which would have launched kontakt.

(something like that...)
