need help printing a MIDI track to an audio track
running dp 4.6.1 here on a dual ppc g5 ....
(i have dp7 and a quad intel machine but haven't installed it yet)
my question is:
how can i record the audio output of a MIDI track into an audio track
inside of dp?
is there a way to assign the output of a MIDI track to get the audio into an audio track through bussing?
i can't figure out how to do it and the dp 4.5 manual is useless
thanks in advance

Re: need help printing a MIDI track to an audio track
Are you talking about an external MIDI device with an audio output? Or a VI or internal MIDI device? I don't have my DP 4 manual around but I might be able to point you to the right chapter.

What is the MIDI track playing? An external synth, or a VI in DP? If it's an external synth, you have to connect it's audio output to an input in your audio interface, and record the audio it plays as you would any other audio source.
If it's a VI, you can use audio busses to route its output to a new audio track and record the output of the VI onto the audio track.

Re: need help printing a MIDI track to an audio track
hi guys
i guess i should have clarified ---
i created a MIDI track in dp and loaded an instrument from my kontakt sampler and recorded MIDI notes on the track.
now i would like to get the MIDI track outputed as audio to record onto an audio track inside dp.
i see i could have created a kontakt instrument track too (if that would have helped me or given me more options), but i just did it as a simple MIDI track and assigned kontakt to it.

I don't think bounce to disk renders VIs in that version of DP but it does now. Maybe you should move to the new machine. Any reason not to?

i have a lot of stuff to transfer (including the hardware) and there's projects i need to finish in this machine first and i can't get into a big learning curve from 4.6 to 7.x at this point

Re: need help printing a MIDI track to an audio track
I don't remember much about 4.6. But since you've got a MIDI track playing a NI instrument, can't you assign the output of the NI instrument to busses that serve as inputs to an audio track? If so, you can set the audio track to record, and play the MIDI track.

Re: need help printing a MIDI track to an audio track
1. last DP7.24 is very stable and works well on a PPC G5. I scored Crooked Arrows on that setup and it worked great.
2. In both DP4 (and DP7)...just route output of your Kontakt instrument to a stereo bus. On an audio track...select that same stereo bus as input....output of audio track is your speaker main output.
3. Set MIDI track to play...kontakt instrument track to play....audio track to record. Press record to begin transport playing/recording.
If you want to hear it while recording...you can click on little speaker icon to left of track to monitor input on audio track.
in DP7 (And I believe DP4 but I forget)...you can select (highlight) the MIDI track and the Kontakt track and in the audio menu choose either bounce to disk...or Freeze and it will create an audio track as well. But...the above procedure is the manual way to do it. and you should be listening to the output anyway. So just a manual record to a track is a good way to kill two birds with one stone. Then you have the audio track in your sequence where you can mix it with other audio tracks...or output/bounce it to a finished output like AIFF or Mp3, etc...
Make sense?
It is all about signal path. "MIDI output" triggers "Kontakt Insrument input"....which in then ouputs audio to a bus (say Bus 5-6) which inputs to an audio track to record....which is either done at that point or those tracks output further to submasters...or other tracks to mix and EQ, a final stereo mix, etc....

Re: need help printing a MIDI track to an audio track
DP7 will bounce to disk for a VI. Much faster than realtime. I know, I know, some people don't "trust" BTD. That's not my problem at all here. Works perfectly.

do you mean in kontakt or dp?
in dp, the only output for that MIDI track that i can select is only another MIDI instrument from the MIDI device list, so i'm not sure what you mean.

Re: need help printing a MIDI track to an audio track
with my MIDI track selected i tried to freeze the track and the freeze option was greyed out.
then i tried bouncing to disk but only got an empty rendering, so i guess what you suggested doesn't work in dp 4.6

Not really at all. Perhaps you just don't look in the right places. Look under MIDI tracks in the index and there solution IS there. Absolutely, positively. Lots of folks did this for years in that version. It's not that big a deal. Really.rumble wrote:the dp 4.5 manual is useless

yes, dp 4.5 manual, chapter 13 - MIDI tracks
i've looked through all 6 pages of the chapter.
there's nothing that tells you specifically how to output a MIDI track and turn it into an audio track.

Try finding "REAL-TIME BOUNCE TO DISK" in the manual.

No, the output of the Kontakt instrument, you bus that to an recordable track, not the output of the MIDI track. This is pretty basic DAW stuff. More manual reading might be in order. Here is an article at MOTU Tech support that explains it.rumble wrote:do you mean in kontakt or dp?
