Problems with PLAY on new rMBP/DP8

Post by FutureLegends »

Hey!

Trying to get PLAY to work on a new MacBook Pro w/ Retina Display. I transfered all the samples from my old Mac Pro to an external drive and installed the latest PLAY (3.0.40) on the rMBP.

Running the Stand alone application, I cannot tell it to add samples to the favourites. It says: "The was an error creating the favorites entry". Can't get it to load any samples at all.

Trying to load a Digital Performer project with PLAY instances gives the expected message that the samples can't be found and three options "Ignore Error", "Find Sample" and "Cancel Load". Problem is that all buttons are completely unresponsive and the only way out is to force quit DP.

This is a fresh install of OSX 10.8.2 and first time I install PLAY on it.

Anyone have experiences moving PLAY to a new computer?

Damn, I was finally ready to test out how the rMBP really compared to my old Mac Pro, but as all my projects contain PLAY/EastWest samples it's a bit difficult now ;)

Recently got PLAY moved over to a new 2012 machine.

Before you set up Favorites, click on System (right next to Favorites). Do you see your hard drive directories?

If so, navigate through the directory to your PLAY Instruments and onto your preferred "ewi" file.

If PLAY cannot find the samples at that point and shows the option to find the samples as being grayed out, you might need to reinstall it. I would recommend downloading the latest installer rather than installing from disc and updating from there. Some older installers released (on disc) for 10.5 or earlier might or might not work in Lion or ML as smoothly.

Also, if there any library updates for your collection(s), I would recommend installing those as well.

FWIW-- I'm using PLAY v 3.0.40 in OSX 10.8.2.

One other consideration: update your iLok drivers.

I had a similar problem with Play last year, and this fixed it.

Thanks.

It's impossible to navigate the harddrive when clicking that 'system' button. Each 'step' just goes back to the root of that drive! (very weird!)
And ctrl clicking to add a favourite lets me navigate to where the instrument files are but the doesnt 'stick' and even though the name is added to the favourites when clicking it it says "please choose you location" or something like that.

I installed the latest driver (3.0.40) from EastWest's webpage. Also downloaded the latest iLok drivers. The iLok seems to be working as it should in MachFive 3.

I'm not installing from the DVDs as the rMBP doesn't have any and the samples are copied from the old Mac Pro unto a USB drive.

Could it be that PLAY isn't working with USB3 drives?
But still the unresponsive buttons that doesn't even let me cancel when opening a project in DP leads me to think there's something else than that.

I have tried re-installing PLAY.

Not being able to navigate the directories is a problem, to say the least. While I don't have a USB3 drive to test, I can't imagine why USB3 *would* create a problem.

The only way to be 99% sure that it is or isn't USB3 is to try running the library from a different hard drive buss (if possible). If everything works from a different drive buss, then there *could* indeed be some protocol exception with USB3.

If you get the same results as before, then it's less likely that USB3 is the culprit.

Please forgive me if the following sounds overly simple, but I've read a lot lately about users of DP8 in later OSX versions having permissions issues after new installs. Not having proper access to directories has been one symptom of the permissions conundrum. If you have repaired permissions already, ignore this suggestion.

Still snooping for other symptoms and possible solutions.... But because you have taken the obvious approaches to getting this fixed, I would run your entire troubleshooting routine by East West just to see if they have additional suggestions.

I am all of a sudden getting a weird message about not finding samples. I ignore it and the seems to load fine. The latest update for Snow Leopard really solved the load in times. I repaired permissions still the dialog box appears. All I did is switch computers and am now using a firewire to thunderbolt connecter from the same VI drive. Play is very peculiar. It is a drag to have to keep pointing the it to the sample files.

How is the PLAY engine running in DP8 64-bit mode these days? I'm still thinking about HS and QL Pianos. I hear HS Gold runs fine. I've heard mixed remarks about Diamond.

I have a 2008 MacPro, SSDs for both OS/Apps and Samples, and lots of RAM.

Mac Studio M1 Ultra, 128GBs Unified memory, 4TB SSD.
Interfaces: MOTU M2 and 8A (2.1 and 5.1 setups).
DAWs: Digital Performer 11, Logic Pro, Cubase 12 Pro, Studio One Pro.
Sample Libraries: Primary - VSL (all), Spitfire, (mostly all), and many others.
External Controllers: Metagrid Pro and Studio Logic SL|MIXFACE

I was gonna post an update about this but then the forum was down and subsequently, I forgot :?

I got a tip on the EW Forum to open Digital Performer (someone else had seen the frozen dialog box in Cubase as well) in 32bit. And that let me finally direct it to where samples where located.
Problems continued after that though, PLAY didn't remember where the samples where etc. This turned out to be caused by my samples folder being named "• Samples", removing the "• " solved this. Never had an issue with that in any other app. MachFive 3, for example, handles that just fine.
Finally I could also add the libraries to the Favourites tab, but only one at the time, then I had to close and reopen the project to add the next one.
So, it seems PLAY is still quite buggy on my rMBP w/ OSX 10.8.2 but now at least it's workable even in 64bit.
Hope the release PLAY 4 soon...
Let's hope for improvements in PLAY 4.
