Scissor Tool and Loop Slicing, MIDI Event Trouble

Post by DanielCoe »

Imagine you have a single note event triggering a looping phrase, whatever the sampler, whatever the library. With the scissor tool cut that note event on the grid and one would think the loop would retrigger on the start of the new note event.

Not so in My DP. The first note event of the resulting 2 somehow overlaps the second and when its note off message interferes with the note on message of the second note. Why is this so? It it an option I could alter?

(Hmm, thinking to myself, the slice may be sample accurate, but MIDI data is far larger than a single sample, hence the interference…)

I like to think that creating a stuttering effect could be as simple as dragging the scissor across a note event with the grid active, but the notes cut each other off. I remedy this with an additional step of subtracting 10 ticks from each note, but I'd rather not have to do that.

Anyone out there that might have some insight? :banghead:

All the best,
Daniel

Can you select all the cut notes and make them all one tick shorter? With shorctuts that should take no longer than 2 seconds to do.

Also, the way it plays the loop depends more on your sampler than on DP. It is in the former where you select the way it loops (retrigger the sample, legato mode, song position, etc.).

Thanks for the input,

It happen regardless of the sampler/its setting, & even with non-looping instruments. What shortcuts are you talking about? A DP based macro that opens the duration window, selects subtract, types in 1, hits enter? That'd be nice. (Can Quikkeys do that?)

I think that could be done with some clever QK programming.

Otherwise, try DP's regular shortcuts. I can't tell you what they are at the moment because I customized most of them and now I don't know which ones are default or personalized ones.

But the workflow would be to select the notes, invoke the Change Duration command and feed it the proper setting (shorten notes by 1 tick).
You could also do it graphically, but it wouldn't be as fast or accurate.

Either way, this should be a very quick (1-2 second) distraction.

I have this problem too - it's clearly a bug that DP prioritizes note on messages, so the note off message comes last and stops the sound! I submitted a techlink awhile back and they say they're working on it. But yes, for now you have to change duration and subtract a few ticks. A workaround, albeit a bit annoying!
