Mountain Lion and 828 mk3 default settings issue

Post by bruceb17 »

What's up with MOTU? I've posted query about this issue with their online tech support since I upgrade to Mountain Lion in July but have not gotten a single reply. They used to be good about tech support replies.

In any event, I hope someone here can help. After Mtn Lion install, the Mac doesn't retain 828 mk3 signal routing. Before, I just turn on the 828 and everything works. Now, every time I boot up the 828, I have to:

- go to system setting and select 828 as the sound output
- boot up Audio/MIDI utility, select 828 as output device
- select Main out (it always defaults to analog out now)
- select configure speakers
- select Main out (defaults to analog here too)

I have to go through similar procedure for audio in routing.

As said, before Mtn Lion, all this was retained. I booted up 828 and all worked.

Can anyone offer advise on this. I've looked around this board and I don't see other discussion around this. Maybe MOTU needs to update their driver? Maybe I need to do a clean re-install of the driver? (clean install requires removal of relevant files before hand; I don't know which files to remove).

Boo on MOTU for absent tech support. I hope someone here can help.

From what I've been told, there are known problems with the drivers on ML that have been duplicated by MOTU. They are working on it. I have the 828mk3 with ML and DO NOT have to reselect the device in the Sound Preferences panel on each reboot. I do however have to reselect the Default Stereo Output Pair and recheck the use coreaudio controls option in MOTU Audion Setup. Also if you haven't checked, in AMS the 828 replicates itself on each restart as a new MIDI device - #2 #3 #4, etc.

MOTU issued a new driver earlier in this month, but it did not fix my issues. If you want to reinstall the drivers, run the installer and there is an Uninstall option in the Installer Type dialog dropdown. Probably not necessary - the new installers overwrite the old drivers, but you never know.

Hi Bruce,
I responded to both of the TechLinks you submitted. I answered the first ticket on July 31st (the same day it was posted).

If you log into your MOTU.com there is no reason you should not see my replies, but if you are having issues please send me a PM.

Cheers,
Lorne

Please advise all technical inquires should be submitted directly to MOTU's support channels (phone and online support).

Hi Lorne - Sorry I didn't see your reply (you usually get an email notification to that effect but I didn't).

In any event - I did post a response (your suggestion had no effect - it seems to be a system level issue).

At least good to know that it is a known issue and a fix is in the works.

Since August, now December going on January and still no fix?

I have a 2012 imac. Every startup or reboot, I have to re-select the Motu as the audio device in Mountain Lion Preferences/Sound since it defaults back to internal, and then go into Motu Audio setup and select my preferred Output there each time. That really is intolerable. How much longer till this can be fixed? I have no such problem with the same computer with a few other audio interfaces.

Well, it's nice to know MOTU did actually answer it. Good thing they saw your post here (as Lorne mentioned this is NOT an official MOTU site) or all the people who come through this site would have been given a false impression.

I think Motu is thinking this Apple's problem, which means it won't be fixed by Apple or Motu. A workaround would be for motu to allow users to modify the "Motu default" Sterio Output choice so that it could be something other than Analog 1-2. At least that way users wouldn't have to load Motu setup and re-select each time we turn on the computer. I wish there was a batch script we could run and place in login items to accomplish this. Any other ideas?

Maybe it is Apple's problem. I'm not having the problem at all on two setups. If we're all using the same 828 Mk3 and the same driver, but different Macs, maybe the problem is related to something specific about those Macs.

It is showing up on the newer 2012 macs, but I can assure you this will never be on Apple's radar and they will never admit they can fix it or not, unless it is related to a wider issue. SO either Motu figures out what's up, or it likely won't ever get fixed. Again, instead of point fingers at Apple, why not try for a workaround to help us customers? Can't really be that hard to figure out. Maybe not a proper fix, but a workaround like I mentioned above of some sort. Otherwise, customers will likley start making other choices. Again, this is not an issue on other firewire audio interfaces I have tested, so it's something specific to what's going on with this Motu device.

After a response today, apparently Motu has decided they can't fix this and that Apple needs to.

It may have something to do with permissions, but Apple isn't going to be able to fix this. What Motu should do now is allow a firmware update to the 828 and the 828 hybrid, that allow you to simply change the "default" Stereo Output away from "Analog 1+2" and to whatever you use, so that way if it reverts to factory defaults like it does now, at least you won't have to manually change it every startup. I have to think they can do that at least if they wanted to. It certainly would show good faith and help us out.

The suggestion to turn off the unit first before shutdown changes nothing for me. I hope someone responds to my request for the workaround I have suggested above.

If you wait until after you log on to turn on the 828mk3 you don't have to reselect the default options and the MIDI device is not duplicated. At least that's my experience.

Nazrat I noticed this with lion and ml. I also find external drives do not mount properly unless I let the Mac get part way through its startup. This seems entirely backwards compared to the past when it always seemed best to power up everything but the Mac first, and the start the Mac.

This preocedure has no effect on my 2012 imac at least. Motu blames Apple, but somehow, this is the only company that has this issue. Other audio interfaces are fully selectable ans stick, so why blame Apple here?

I wonder if it's a Firewire vs. USB thing. who is using FW vs. USB and who is having the problem? I'm using FW with a Mac Mini, and I'm having the problem.

All FW here. I'm not having the problem now that I power up the Mac first, then everything else.
