Hi there,
I just bought a factory refurbished MOTU 896HD to go alongside my MOTU 828mkII for 18 i/o. Both interfaces work perfectly well on their own, but when I sync them up, I get all kinds of clicks, pops and high pitched beeping. I use both Sonar Producer X1 and Adobe Audtion 3.0 & 5.5. All of the software is having the same problem and I think it's a sample rate problem.
So, I have the 896HD as master and the 828mkII as slave (but tried it the other way and same problem), and set the sample rate to 48000. When I open up Sonar Producer X1, it tells me 'The default audio format is not compatible with one or more sound cards. It has been reset to 44100 Hz (16 bit), as suggested by the driver'. The same thing happens if I set it to anything higher than 44.1. It also won't let me set it to 24 bit: it automatically goes back to 16 bit. When I open up my two Adobe Audition programs, it doesn't give me a warning, but just automatically resets the clock to 44.1 without me doing anything (even though I've set the default to higher).
Okay, so that's problem 1. Problem 2 is even when I leave it set to 44.1, when I do some tests with the microphone (doesn't matter which input), the signal comes in and out, and makes loud popping sounds. Sonar X1 also tells me 'the audio engine has stopped unexpectedly' on a regular basis.
As mentioned, these problems only happen when I sync the two up (via firewire).
Here are my computer specs:
Computer Specs:
Intel Core2 Duo CPU, E6550 @ 2.33 GHz
8GB RAM
4.5 TB HDD
Windows 7 64 bit
I'd love some help! Have a recording session with full band coming up in about 2.5 weeks, and really pulling my hair out here!
warm regards,
Adam

Re: MOTU 896HD & 828mkII synch issues
Thanks. Pretty disappointing to not hear anything back from anybody though! I did get help from MOTU customer support though, and discovered my firewire card was not giving enough bandwidth, and they suggested I look into a new firewire card made by Texas Instruments. For now I'm just running the 896HD via the adat in on the 828mkii. Works a treat this way.

Mac user here so I'm clueless with a Windows system as most of us here are.
FireWire cards can be tricky, did MOTU mention anything in relation to the chipset of the fw card?
If I remember correctly ,I think cards with Texas Instrument chips are prefered.
Also are you running other things off of the FW card like hard drives?
2012 Mac Pro 3.46GHz 12 core 96 gig,Mojave, DP11.01,Logic 10.51, RME UCX,Great River ME-1NV,a few microphones,UAD2, Komplete 12U,U-he,Omni & way too many VI's,Synths & FX galore!, Mimic Pro w/ SD3,Focal Twin 6 monitors, Shunyata...........

Yes, they suggested I get a FW card with a Texas Instruments chipset (mine isn't). Haven't done this yet: will get onto it soon though. As mentioned, moving along okay as I've just connected the 896HD via the adat in of the mkII.
