CPU Playback meter Spikes
What is causing my CPU playback meter to spike.
It will be humming along at about 10-15% and all of a sudden BAM! a spike, sometimes with either a click or the audio drops out for a split second. Play the track again and it doesn't happen, or maybe in another spot.
I am running
G5 OSX 10.4.2 Tiger Dual 2.7 w/ 2gig of ram
2) HD-192's DP4.6
I have tried changing the buffer size and the Host Buffer multiplier. same thing, random spikes on playback. This is not a constant problem, just intermittent

Re: CPU Playback meter Spikes
Cpu spikes may be caused by some plugins .....
Mine are du to Groove Agent 2 when I make automation on it ....
Try to isolate the plugs ....
Maybe ....

Re: CPU Playback meter Spikes
I've ALWAYS gotten these when I stop the sequence (as far back as DP 3.1 I think - or whenever the performance monitor started.)
Don't ever get them otherwise during playback. You certainly have enough RAM and processor power. You might check Activity monitor whilerunning and see what the % for DP is. But I'm guessing it will not be over 60% (if even that).

Re: CPU Playback meter Spikes
I think this has to do with Dynamic CPU Management. I have the same probs. with my UAD card in 4.6. I never had the problems with 4.5.

Slipstream, what was your process to go back to 4.52, I tried to go back to 4.5 but I'm still getting the problems that 4.6 caused........4.5 ran solid before i updated.

I just started getting spikes even when idling. I'm thinking it may be the new UAD update but i'm not positive. I'm going to do a bit of investigation tonight although i'd rather be mixing.

To add to the "future search database"............
Spiking --- It is also caused when using the "ping-pong" effect in "Mach-5" when DP has a "tempo change". It spikes right on the tempo change. If I recall it only does it when the tempo is slowed (or is it when it is sped up? Hmmm? Anyway, it only happens in one direction).
Someone else posted this info a while back and it saved me hours of searching. Thank god for the internet!!!! (errr, Al Gore????)
cheers

My machine (Dual 1.8 G5/OS 10.3.9) with 4.6 will cook along for 3 - 4 hours with no big problems. Occasional spikes, but no audio drop out or crashes. Then BOOM! One crash after another after another. Sometimes it helps to restart my CPU, but it's ridiculous. Many times it will just crash while simply playing back. Most crashes happen during edge edits. It's crazy that mmy machine becomes almost useless and unstable at about 40% CPU useage. Will MOTU ever figure out how to write software for OSX?
I love DP, but the frequent crashes - and embarassment that comes with it - has my eyes wandering and wondering if there's something more stable out there. When you're doing pro work, you can't afford to give up hours each week to crashes and tech probs. You need stuff to WORK!
I know, I know... it's all my fault, or so I'm told. What a load of crap. I do nothing but audio on my machine and downloading updates. It is very streamlined and I run TTP and DW on it. I realize I use it for a pro application, but I shouldn't have to rewrite the freaking OS to make the program stable when there are other companies doing it "right!"

I've run into fewer problems with DP then I have with either Protools or
Logic Express at home.
Have a look at the Nuendo/Cubase/Logic forums.
Lots of pissed off people
I'm honestly not sure anyone is really doing it right.
I've run into some CPU spikes lately though , and a few crashes
in DP (which is always a concern)
I've also done everything possible to repair/deal with the problem.
I actually got a reply from an email to Motu today..
"that I sent 2 WEEKS AGO!!!"
I'm usually pretty happy with there support but this time I have to say
Motu..WHAT THE FU#K??!!!
So yeah... I don't think there doing it right either.
