DP 8 and audio artifcacts

Post by bricker »

Has anybody found that DP 8 introduced an increase in "clipping" noises during playback? I can only say for MIDI but I wonder if it's the same for audio as well. I don't mean the type of "clipping" that happens when the input/output gets overloaded, I mean clipping noises that DP seems to be adding in. When I bounce the track, the noises aren't there.

It happens especially when there are more than ~4 MIDI tracks playing back. I have 5 VI's and maybe 7 or 8 plugins (mainly just a few compressors and EQ's).

I wish I could provide more details but I don't really know where else to look. Is there some way for me to troubleshoot this issue? I don't remember it being this bad in DP 7.

**Edit**
The clipping corresponds with red spikes in the "Processing" meter. I feel like with 16 GB of RAM and running in 64-bit mode, playing back ~10 MIDI tracks and a video shouldn't use up the entirety of the processing power, but I am just guessing at that :)

**Edit 2**
I can see in the computer's process table that DP is taking up over 80% of the computer's processing power when it's just sitting there, and "auxhost" (the JBridgeM bridge host application) taking up over 25%. It will be nice when I can get all of my plugins into 64-bit! I would still like to know why the Processing clips are causing audio artifacts, and if it can be prevented.

Thanks!

Check you buffer setting (setup/configure audio/hardware driver). Lower setting (512 or lower) can introduce clipping in audio playback. Higher settings might clear that, but can introduce latency from MIDI devices. In general, I track at 512 and mix at 1024.

Also, update to DP 8.01 and REPAIR PERMISSIONS!!!! This fixes a lot of clipping issues for a few folks around here.

Other stuff could be at play (no pun intended) but this will give you a good start toward fixinf the issue. And I should add AGAIN that clipping was fixed for several members here after repairing permissions.

Thanks for the reply! Indeed, I had my buffer size set to 256, so I've switched it to 512 and will report back if it eases some of the clipping.

I will also repair permissions like you suggested.

Thanks again!

No problem. I still get clipping at 512 but accurate timing in tracking is more important.

Good luck.

Definitely seems to have cleaned it up enough so that I'm not bothered by it anymore.
