DP 8 Playback hiccups

Post by Todzilla »

I'm loving DP 8 for the most part. One annoying bug is that sometimes the playback of a project (while recording or not) will "hiccup" or drop out for a half a second or so. It doesn't affect the audio being recorded, but it certainly throws off singers and musicians who are tracking to it. Happens in different places, not that often, but if there's a setting I could tweak to resolve it, that'd be great.

As you can see from my sig, I have plenty of horsepower. I set my buffer to 1024, just to make sure that wasn't the problem. It seemed to have maybe decreased the frequency of these drop outs, but I never had this happen on my old PPC G5 w 3G RAM w DP 6.

Thanks,

If your signature is up to date, update from 10.7.3 - many problems were fixed in 10.7.4.

Repair permissions.

I haven't had this problem in 8 but had it in 7.24. If I made tweaks to certain plugs during playback, the audio would cut out. Never affected the recorded audio. I figured it was a priorities issue that was fixed in the 64 bit kernel.

Have you updated to DP 8.01 yet?

Thanks Mike.

Made upgrades as recommended. Hiccups may have lessened, but they're still there.

Never had this problem on my old PPC G5 running DP 6.X

Yikes

I recommend using fast harddrives with cache memory 64MB for audio.

I have that happen occasionally in DP7.24 OS10.7.4 when I run a lot of intensive processing at once (Slate VCC and VTM are particular offenders, which is why I add them only at the end. they do sound oh so fine...)

When it happens again, try bypassing a bunch of processor-intensive plug-ins and see if that helps, just for diagnostic purposes. Also, try closing all windows you don't need. (i.e. meter bridges, the mixing board, anything with lots of live updating.) And/or print some of the more processor-intensive synths and disable the VI. Anything to reduce processing load, just to see if your problem is caused by processor overload, which it seems to be here on my end. For me, reducing non-essential tasks to free up processing power usually takes care of the problem.

Just like in your case, for me it doesn't affect the actual operation, i.e. if it happens when I print a mix, the recorded file is flawless, it's only the playback that gets briefly stalled. But of course if it happens during tracking its a real problem (and it's a nuisance in either case.)

Radiogal's suggestion of faster hard drives certainly would help. Also, are you running DP8 in 64 bits? 64bit operation gives you more power, in addition to allowing for more RAM access (or is it *because* it allows for more RAM access? Not sure, but it does give you more muscle.) Also, of course disabling any and all background processes will free up power, i.e. check to see if Spotlight is running. And close all running apps besides DP. Etc.

I'd be curious to hear if any of this makes a difference for you, so do keep us posted here on everything you find. Thanks!

Thanks guys.

Yes, I'm running in 64 bit mode, My HD is a single M4 Intel SSD. All this said, I've run into this problem a lot less lately, even on bigger more complete projects. Maybe it's working itself out?
