RTAS, AU and VST. You can use them for 10 days. :D

Avox report

Post by buzzsmith »

Downloaded the 5 modules this AM, and installed 4 this evening.

Initial reaction is "I think I could use this", but it's not blowing me away yet.

Granted, my experiments were quick and obviously with more reading of the PDF manual and fine tuning, I'm sure I could get more out of the various processors, but I seem to notice a "metallic" quality(?) being introduced.

The Duo function (double tracking) seems to be fairly useable, but it still doesn't sound to me like a true double track.

The Punch module shows some promise with the breathiness control.

Anyway, quick review...I'll experiment more before my 10 day grace period expires and dutifully report.

Thanks for the heads-up about it's availability!

After spend a day on these plug ins, I'm very dissapointed.
Good thing that I didn't have to pay for them. :D

The only usable may be "Choir", but the setting above 8 voices is useless.

And what about AVox PUNCH...

Could they make a compressor MORE annoying than that?

Yeah, they sent me an email saying it's now available. Here was my response:

Throat modeller - I don't know which throat they have based the model on, but I suspect it's a guy with a bolt through the neck. That would explain the metallic sound.
Choir - any resembalnce to persons living or dead is purely coincidental.
Then I gave up, and saved some money;-))

I second to that Mic Mod.

You should read Mitch Gallagher's review from Sweetwater's Sweet Notes on page 7:
I'm hooked on AVOX for vocal processing.
For my money, Choir and Duo are worth the price of admission by themselves;
add in Punch and Sybil, and you have an excellent vocal solution.
But the star of the show, Throat, pushes AVOX way over the edge into completely new territory.
Yeah, rigrht trash territory.

I just tried these out last night, and my god, these are extremely disappointing products. The Throat Modeler sounds horrible, and might work if you're making some sort of monster movie. Otherwise it's a waste.

Choir and Duo are okay, but they don't do what you would expect them to do. Namely, make a single voice sound like a choir and a single voice sound like it's been double tracked. What I heard last night was more along the lines of delay and reverb. And I already have tools that do that.

After that, I didn't bother with Punch and Judy, or whatever the other two plugs are named. This set is a waste IMHO.

I've sent them a couple of civil, respectful requests a few months back. It wasn't until I was sent a curt email that without directly saying so, pretty much said, "don't hold your breath" that I sent that last email. I wonder what their bottom line looks like these days. It seems to me that other than Autotune, there's not that much recent positive buzz about their other products. Now, even though the new pitch correction feature in DP is still in it's infancy, I can't help but think that it can't be good for Antares' finances. In a way, I feel bad about that and I understand that they need to diversify and develop new products to survive, but dropping support older products is no way to build customer loyalty. What other products will they decide to stop supporting next? Also, if the negative impressions of Avox on this forum becomes the norm industry-wide, they're in big trouble. They'd be a company with ONE viable product (Autotune) and that's never a good thing.

Then given your past experiences, perhaps it's time to write them off.

I've tried the AVOX suite :

I think I've never heard a more, mmmm, impossible to use plugin...
Impossible to get a decent sound from it (especially the Throat).

I wonder if they want to commit a commercial suicide with such a piece of @&é&@ !!!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who wasn't impressed.
I really wanted to love the plugins - but I thought they sounded a bit naff.
Thing is, autotune is such a good product.

Maybe it depends on the type of vocal you treat.

One of these days good quality vocal modeling software will come to pass, but it sure isn't v1 of Avox.
